It was worth it for one simple reason. Because he thought it was. Everything ever sold has a different value for different people. Some think the Ferrari I bought was not worth it because their are cars that perform as good or better for less money. But it was worth it to me and that's all that matters.
That's exactly what I tell dealerships that are trying to sell me a car. I figure out what it is worth to me and then I tell them that's what I will pay. They always say well that's not what the book value is or the average buy price is these days. I tell them none of that matters. The only thing that matters is what it's worth to me. So everything ever sold in history has been worth it. That's what's great about capitalism. Everything is on a sliding scale.
