When you consider why so many misfits join the military, it's not hard to understand why you encounter the behaviour you have described. The recent PBS "Carrier" series profiled a number of misfits who joined the Navy. All profiled (except one obvious loser) improved themselves to the extent they took pride in their accomplishment. Perhaps the Navy holds recruits to a higher standard, or perhaps the TV series was scripted that way.
