This will be a tough recession and they always feel like "it's different this time".
My real worry is you can't underestimate the governments ability to screw things up and make it worse.
But Mike is right, go back and look at the market returns in say 1973, 1974, then look at the rebound in 75 and 76. It may make it a bit easier to sit tight.
