How do I remove the side moulding??

I just bought my 99 FRC and it has some off white color side mouldings and I want to take it off. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to go about doing this?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Use a hairdryer on the molding to soften the double stick tape that is holding it on. You can pull back on it cutting the tape with a razor. The tape that is left on the body can be removed with naptha or lighter fluid.

I would suggest that you remove the one small piece that's on the fender first and check for fading. If they have been on there a long time there could be quite a difference in the paint. Let us know how you make out. I waited a long time to remove mine (I was scared). It's really a no brainier

My moldings were on two years before I took them off. My car is Millennium Yellow, when I took mine off you could definitely see where the molding was (the yellow was darker). I was heart broken. This car has been Zainoed to death and kept covered. I was about ready to put the molding back on (I only took off one side) and was talking to another member with a MY car and he had the same problem. He suggested that I let the car sit in the sun, on his it took about a month. So I tried it on mine. I left the right door and fender uncovered everyday afternoon for about 10 days and sure enough you can't tell there was ever any moldings on it.

I took the side molding off my camaro at 80k miles and it was the dark blue color. Of course it left a big long faded line down the side, so i took it to a friend who has a body shop and he used a high speed buffer and the faded marks went away instantly.

Lithium - did you get the marks off?

I have a black 01 with moldings on there that I want to take off. I think it looks better without them - I just don't want to regret it.

Take off the small piece buy the fender first. I have found that the more heat you use the more of the adhesive will stay on molding and less on the car. I hardly had any adhesive on the body, less than 10%. Putting my car in the sun for a few hours a day for about 10 days and you can't even tell they were ever on there.

Thanks for the tips - I got those off today. It was a pain getting the adhesive off the car, but it looks great now. I used a claybar to get the last bit off.

With the right compound and buffer pads these marks can be buffed right out. The difference in color is not that the base coat of your car has faded it is that the rest of the clear coat on the car has been subject to the elements while the parts under the molding have not. Once you buff and level the clear to the same level...no more molding marks!
