Adding up all the leftover 2007 and 2008, and all the 2009 unsold, there are 6,730 Corvettes sitting out there today waiting for a buyer.
I'm sure Zippy or someone can tell us what percentage of a year's supply that is.
They should slow down production, or somehow figure out how to sell Corvettes again. I can't see the logic in building thousands of cars that you have to sell at a loss.
Many of us would have bought a new Z06 if the price was similar to the C5 Z06.
i think that the corvette should be a built to order car. there should only be 1 or at max 2 on a lot unsold at any time. this would keep the surplus down and the prestige of owning any corvette up.
i see a corvette on the road today, and if its not a z i don't even pay attention to it anymore. don't know why, maybe i've got my sights set on what i want and won't settle or maybe there are just so many base coupes out there now that i just don't find them all that exclusive

The Corvette is a mass produced car - always has been. That is what GM knows how to do. If you really really need to have an exclusive car, do not buy a Corvette. Remember, to the general public all Corvettes look about the same. And also, if you think the price is high now for what you are getting, then you'll really be griping when it is built-to-order.
There's a saying. In sports cars you can choose 2 of the following 3: (A) high performance, (B) high luxury/exclusivity, or (C) affordability.

Re: Is GM closing Corvette Factory?
I would really like to see a separate Corvette Division but I realize that won't happen. Just think about it. A dealership with nothing but Corvettes and the technicians to work on them. No cobalt, truck, aveno or whatever techs working on Corvettes.

i beg to differ that you only get to choose 2 or the options up there with the exclusivity performance and affordability, i think the z is exclusive its so much more than the regular vette that only people who actually know the benefits get it. thats why i have my sights set on it. and i could care less if the general public thinks it just a vette, car guys know the difference. and if some one in a ricer pulls up next to you and doesn't know the diff then its an automatic win.
Does anyone think GM will be going into Chapter 11? Anyone want to buy a Corvette Factory? Who owns the Corvette Museum? Just wondering what "changes" the future will bring...........interesting times.
First off, for anyone who thinks C6Z should be priced similar to the C5Z think of this:
If there was a performance option for a 7.0 engine with fixed calipers and an aluminum frame back when the C5 was out, it would have easily have added another $15k to the Zs price. Take into account that the base 09 C6 is equal in performance to the C5Z in most regards and costs less than the C5Z, and you can see that the prices for the C6Z are about what they should be.
Now about the future of the Vette:
Looking back historically, when Chevy was in trouble with the future of the Vette they either reduced the outputs or halted updates (1983) altogether. When they were really in the air as what to do with future models they would drag the production years to 10 years and over.
Most likely we will see a combination of these events, with Chevy reducing the size of the engines and the car itself to more Porsche-like proportions (one of the target audiences of the Vette). My guess is that they will probably downsize to a 4.5L overhead cam engine, and tout the efficiency of the engine with gas mileage and hp/L.
As for those who think the Vette will become its own brand, let’s hope not. If you think that the cars are expensive now, wait until the car has a separate brand. With cars still available for discount and not selling and GM most likely to declare bankruptcy and require aid, GM would be wise to show future investors that the old days of gas guzzlers and excess are in the past. The future of the American auto is efficiency (wait and see what Fiat does with Chrysler).
That said I hope that a reasonable medium is found between performance and efficiency with the Vette, highly doubt that it will disappear altogether though.

I pick "A" and "C"
