DETROIT - The official Corvette ZR1 numbers are in and they're good. Very good: * $103,300 MSRP (including $850 destination charge)
* EPA-estimated fuel economy of 14 city and 20 highway
* 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds
* 0-100 mph in 7.0 seconds
* Quarter-mile elapsed time of 11.3 seconds at 131 mph
The Corvette ZR1 also has a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h), making it the fastest Corvette ever produced and ranking it among the global super cars of commensurate performance. None of those other super cars, however, equals the ZR1's performance-per-dollar ratio.
"The ZR1 is an incredible machine by any measure," said Ed Peper, North American Vice President, Chevrolet. "There's simply no other vehicle in the world that does a better job of balancing performance, price and fuel economy."
Performance perspective
The Corvette ZR1's 0-60 performance is 0.3-second quicker than the already-quick Corvette Z06 and the 0-100-mph performance is nearly a full second quicker - 7 seconds vs. the Z06's 7.9 seconds. It is performance that is equal to or better than many super cars costing substantially more.
"A favorable power-to-weight ratio gives the ZR1 an advantage over the competition and performance that has to be experienced to fully appreciate," said Tom Wallace, Corvette chief engineer. "Of course, on a racetrack, drivers of competitors' cars may appreciate the ZR1 in a whole different manner."
And the racetrack isn't the only place where the ZR1 trumps its super-car competitors - it beats them at the gas pump, too. According to fueleconomy.gov, the ZR1's EPA-rated 14 city and 20 highway mileage ratings beat 2008 competitors such as the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano (11 city / 15 highway); the Lamborghini Murcielago (8 city / 13 highway) and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage (12 city / 19 highway). They're competitive with the Dodge Viper (13 city / 22 highway) and the Porsche 911 GT3 (15 city / 22 highway).
Under the carbon-fiber hood
A new LS9 6.2L supercharged small-block engine powers the ZR1's performance capability. Heavy-duty and lightweight reciprocating components support high-rpm performance, while a new, sixth-generation supercharger (and complementing charge-cooling system) helps the LS9 make big power and torque across the rpm range. The engine is hand-assembled at GM's Performance Build Center, in Wixom, Mich.
In addition to the LS9 engine, the ZR1 is a technology powerhouse, designed with lightweight and unique components that reinforce its performance with a confidant feel on either a highway or road course.
Options
The standard ZR1 comes with accoutrements based on the Z06, including lightweight seats and lightweight content. The available uplevel interior package includes power-adjustable, heated and leather-trimmed sport seats (embroidered with the ZR1 logo); side air bags; Bose premium audio system; navigation system; Bluetooth connectivity; power telescoping steering column; custom leather-wrapped interior available in four colors and more. Chrome wheels are the only other available option on the ZR1. Detailed pricing noted below.
* $103,300 Base MSRP including destination
* $1,700 Gas guzzler tax
* $10,000 Option package
* $2,000 Chrome wheels
The $10,000 "OPTION PACKAGE" is for one years worth of pre-paid insurance.
YIKES! $103,000? But after reading all that, it sure sounds like a Super car at Retail Prices. And with today's gas prices, those with fat wallets or deep pockets and an Uncle in the Oil Business are sure to have no worries.
Up to today, I had zero insterest in this new addition, but wow.... The performance factor is staggering.
(Sure would look good in Arctic White!)

Ditto. If the ZR1 ever approaches the percentage price reduction I got off of my recently acquired Z06, I might give it some consideration since I doubt we will see this level of factory performance again for Corvette for a long time, if ever.

Let's see how much you would pay -- $115k + $7k Tax, Tags
and Title and we are talking $122,000. I am guessing with 1,500 coming out that the premium on 2009's will be $10-20k. So if you have an extra $50k over the Z06, then you should buy the ZR-1.
The other problem is that stupid hood window. It would take carbon fiber surgery to get rid of the Engine "window" blemish. Of course, it is unique, but no less stupid for it. Another non-functional "work of art." Bottom line. They wanted to distinguish this car from the Z06, after which this is really just a modified version... and the "window" of course.
But this car is going to cost about what a 911 Turbo will. Still it is cool, but I was pushing it to pay $70k (plus) for my 08Z
The Corvette ZR1 also has a top speed of 205 mph (330 km/h), making it the fastest Corvette ever produced...
Hmmm.... I think it should be "barely making it the fastest Corvette ever produced..."
A group of Corvette enthusiasts here at my office (myself included) were discussing this, & we're really surprised that its top end is barely above that of the Z06. There are guys in Dubai or in Germany on the Autobahn, for example, who have had their stock Z06's run upwards of 202-203 mph (using GPS Speedometers to get an accurate calculation).
I would have thought that GM would have geared it to be at least a little bit faster on the top end... For the price they're asking, just get a stock Z06 & send it to Lingenfelter with the leftover ~$30-50K (depending on markups) & you'll have something that can smoke a ZR1.
Well I think its a nice car I would like to have but I know I would never buy. I would love to have it in my garage but would never spend the money on it. But if I had enough money to spend on a car roughly 125k then I dont think you are really worried about price to performance ratio. Its just about having the car you spent 125k on. I dont know though I will never have that much money to spend on a car.
How many Mid-Year, Fuelie, and Big Block former clap-trap pieces of junk, that couldn't possibly hold a candle to this car performance-wise, quality-wise, or fun-wise, have sold for $100,000+++++ is the past few years?
The General finally builds THE pre-emptive, genuine World Class Vette, for $10's and $100's of thou$and$ less than the rest of it's annihilated competition, and what's the reaction??
Pony up, if you can, before these things become dinosaurs...
There will NEVER be a better deal, OEM, than this Vette, all-around!
REGARDLESS of what you mod, on what other Vette Model, it ain't a ZR1...

Amen, as well...
For what was dumped into the One Lap Cancer Corvette, le$$ would buy the ZR1...and thankfully, those checks weren't written by me personally, simply "supervised"...
Carping about the price, and what effect it'll have on existing Z06's, is like saying, "back in the day", that L88's ruined the value of Mid-Year L71's...and we now know that wasn't the case.
Buy what you can/will/must, do to it what you can/will/must, and enjoy it! In fact, "drive it like you stole it", if you can/will/must... I do...
