Does your 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

There seems to be a problem with the first to second and second to third shifts when the transmission is cold.

It would be nice to see a show of hands of who has the problem. Hopefully, Gm will "bail us out" with an updated transmission or synchro set after they receive enough complaints.

The T6060 didn't come out until 08 in the Z so I wonder if they're talking about the same problem.

My hard 1-2 shift happens when hot, but no grind just won't go in. Only sometimes.

They already have. Or at least they've bailed themselves out as there's a TSB (#2073364) regarding this...

"#PIP4357: Noise During The 1-2 Shift When Cold - keywords first grate grind second - (Feb 27, 2008)

Models: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V - Tremec Transmission RPO Code MG9

2008-2009 Chevrolet Corvette, Corvette Z06

Equipped With Tremec Manual Transmission RPO Code MM6, MZ6 or MH3

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment about a Nibble or grate type noise that may also be described as a multiple bump feel during 1-2 upshift event while the transmission is cold.

Recommendation/Instructions:

A new transmission synchronizer design was released for the 2008 and 2009 models listed above. The new synchronizer will make a noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear in temperatures at or below 32 degrees F.

This noise/feel is a normal characteristic and wil go away after the transmission warms up. Warm up should occur after approximately 15 miles of normal driving. This condition requires no repair by the dealer.

The service technician should test drive the vehcile to verify the concern. If the noise/feel goes away after the warm up no repair is necessary and the customer should be advised accordingly."

Re: Does you 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

My 08 does not go into 2nd smoothly when cold. The problem goes away after a short time. Less time that what I would think it takes to get any significant temp in the transmission. Much better than my 02 was though.

Re: Does your 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

The transmission shifts very smooth once it's warm so being a little notchy when cold is not a big deal. Heck, it takes me about the same amount of time before I start shifting smoothly once I wake up in the morning.

The performance and feel of the car more than make up for this tiny quirk.

Re: Does your 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

Same here. When cold it feels like I don't have the clutch in far enough when I shift from 1st to 2nd and then from 2nd to third. After it warms up it shifts as smooth as butter in all gears.

Re: Does your 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

Mine is experiencing the same problem. Not so much in 2nd, that shift is fairly clean, even cold. The 2-3 shift however makes the grate sound when cold. It sounds like a bad synchro, but does go away when warm.

The car also will sometimes chatter a bit on takeoff, but only about 10% of the time. Most times it's very smooth. I'm attributing it to the friction coefficient of the clutch as it's just grabbier than other clutches. If there was a problem with the flywheel, I would expect it all the time. Has anyone else experienced this feeling?

Re: Does your 08/09 tranny grind when cold?

I have a 08, it does not really GRIND, but I can really feel it, it is kinda like a "Harley" when you shift, if you try and ez it in, it will grind, but if you go ahead and kinda slap it into gear, no problem...BUT>>this is not a Harley, I did buy a used ZO6 that had 30,000 on it, so I was trying to be carfeul, until I really got the feel of it and even posted about a cluth? maybe starting problem, I still have not got a answer from any one if THEY think GM will replace clutch, IF, it is still under 36,000, "I bet not" but who knows?

OK...chilly then.

Since I posted this I have long forgot about the tranny. I've gotten use to it and it's not really a problem. Definitely not worth having someone stick their dick beaters inside.
