I love my modified stock shifter.........no noise or issues. Wouldn't trade it for double what it cost me (0). Oh yes I have one of MGW's T-Handle Bar Shifters. George makes the best knobs, and other great products for our cars.

I have done this mod last night and it still rattles a lot!
Still using stock handle. 3rd gear seems to be the loudest.
I have other ideas that may help the noise. Will get back to tell if it works or not.
Otherwise, I may just do the OEM shortening way.

It's definately your knob. Pull the knob off and drive around the block. The rattle will be gone. This DIY only addresses the tranny noise.

Wrap electric tape around the threads...it worked for me.

I've had the chance to drive several Zs lately and it seems there are varying amounts of engine vibration from car to car. Could be that the guys that have tried this this mod and still experience the buzz or rattle may have slightly more vibration than others.

One thing I would like to emphasize is the removal of the stop bolts, or at least back them out far enough so the lever won't hit them.

I love my Hurst (had a BM in the mustang and loved that too) only rattles at WOT... might try this cap thing to fully kill the tranny noise and WOT rattle.

I had been using a rubber shifter boot and over the last month or so noticed the noise was increasing again. Well I tore it apart to install this fix and discovered that the friction of shifting wore a hole in the side of the rubber boot and that was the reason for the noise. I suspect that it will not happen with this plug.

what's the diameter of that plug? Is it 1" and a half?

On the pic it looks huge, i went out to homedepot and 1" and a half looks so small comparing to the pic

I would like to thank the many contributors to this topic. The suggestions have been enlightening. With that said, I will share an epiphany that I had during my shifter install:

My equipment list:

1. Hurst shifter: (most adjustable of the ones that I have reviewed)

2. MGW Pistol Grip shift knob: (fits my large hand, nicely)

3. "Jub Jub" 1.5" PVC plug fix

Observations:

1. Hurst Shifter w/no knob installed: "faint" noise, only

2. Hurst Shifter w/factory knob installed: "sickening" amount of noise (akin to a megaphone!!!)

3. Hurst Shifter w/MGW knob installed: as quite as the bare shifer in #1 above

Conclusions:

With the MGW Pistol Grip knob installed, it became clear that the "faint" noise remaining that I was hearing was originating from inside the tranny.

Apparently, with the "stiffer" linkage of the Hurst Shifter, I can now hear the "rubbing" of the shift fork against the synchro-assembly.

Consequently, if I gently "push" the shifter toward the center of the shift gate while in a given gear, the noise all but disappears.

This would support my theory since by doing this I am "centering" the shift fork within the synchro-assembly; there by, minimizing the rubbing and inherent transmission of noise that follows!

Not exactly the perfect fix, but it is workable for me considering the benefit gained from the positive shifts that the Hurst is providing me.

I usually rest my hand on the shifter so that also helps dampen any vibration. I don't pay attention to it anymore.

With the pvc plug installed, after a week of driving, some noise has come around...but between the radio and exhaust, I can't hear it anyways. Plus, I'm not that picky when it comes to interior noises. If I had wanted quiet, I would've bought a Civic with an automatic.
