I have been looking for a used Z06 and have noticed plenty of Z owners (especially in CA where the majority paid sticker +) do not realize what new Z's are going for. They're getting pissed at me for "lowballing" yet they don't seem to understand that they are trying to "rip me off".
Here's a link to a forum dealer offering $11K off msrp on new Z's:
Maxie Price This is a fact.
Courtesy Chevrolet is not exactly "the market place". They are selling new Z06's for close to msrp. Meanwhile, forum dealers like Maxie Price are offerring $11K off msrp. Courtesy has a ton of vettes sitting on their lots and they are not moving. But since they bought most of their used vettes from auctions for around $31K they do have some time to lower their prices. Any extra they make off of unknowing buyers is a bonus.
Nobody in their right mind is going to pay over $35K for a 2002 Z06 with over 10K miles. At $38750 it's ludicrous. Even if the car had 0 miles you still are down 2 years on the warranty. Just to buy an extended warranty would cost you close to $2k. That brings the price to $40750 for a used 2002 vs. $42.5K for a 2004. And this is assuming the 2002 has 0 miles (which will not be the case). Would you be willing to pay for a car with 10K miles, non-updated (read: 2004 is better due to the re-valve) shocks, unknown history, etc. for $1.7K less than a new one? I'd pay the extra $1.7K for a new car every time.
Car depreciation is mostly based off of what you can buy a new one for; not what you paid. Right now a lot of owners are not willing to sell for what "true maret value" is. Some even think the price will
appreciate after GM sells out of new Z's. This is wishful thinking. It will not happen. Yes it sucks for the owner but as a buyer I only care about one thing:
my costs. I don't think that $35K for a Z06 with under 10K miles is an unfair price.
KBB, NADA, Edmunds, etc. haven't factored in the dealer and manufacturer incentives. Once they do you will see the "true" price of the Z06 and it will be in the low to mid $30's.
