Nothing to be gained by getting in an arguement with them. You did right by walking away in my opinion. But... I probably would've stopped by and said hi to the sales manager and let him know I'd be spending my money elsewhere. Who knows how he would have reacted.
Case in point. Last year I was buying over $1000 worth of digital camcorder stuff at Best Buy. The sales clerk would not take my government issued military id as proof of verification for my credit card. I said thanks and went to the store manager. Ended up getting a 10% discount from the manager who clearly recongized what the right answer was.
I've had this same issue with me. I have tattoos from each shoulder to each wrist and my ears are pierced. Anyways... I called the dealer to get some keys cut. They had the blanks I needed. I was in a chevy dealership to ask about getting some keys cut (just in case) I parked in the service area and went inside to ask about the keys. The guy at the counter said he doesn't have them for me. He said "I have them but I'm holding them for another customer." I asked him his name (not important for story) and he said "yeah that's me." and I said "I just got off the phone with you." he said "and where is your Corvette?" I turned around and pointed to my ride and he looked at me dead in the face and said. "That's not your car I KNOW who owns that car." I said "Oh really?.. where is he at...?" He said it was dropped off here an hour or so ago. The conversation had gotten a bit louder in the room, so by this time there were others watching and listening in. So, in front of all the other service techs and customers waiting in the lobby area... I gave him my ultimate bullshit smirk (yeah right buddy look) & I turned around with my remote in hand, flashed the lights and honked the horn...turned back and said (in a higher vocal tone so everyone could hear me) "NOW GO CUT MY FOCKIN KEYS !!" everyone in the service area was like DAMMMMMM!!!! and he just went and cut my keys...when he came back he didn't say anything except "here you go" I went to the cashier and he was bringing her the ticket and I asked if the service manager was in and she said that was him...I then asked him if the dealership manager was in the sales side and she said she could have him paged over. This guy turned SOOOO white and said "Only charge him for one key." I was mad at first about the whole issue. But I am the kinda person that will set you right back down in your little place and treat you like you treat others. I am very polite and friendly and will always listen and explain each side. But don't EVER judge me because of my clothes or tattoos. Needless to say....There are many way to handle a situation. Mine may not be the best example, but one we could learn from. looking back on it... I would still say the same things, but kept my voice down a little better.
I'll try to explain the best i can.I drive to my local dealer and park in front walk through a side door i see 3 salesmen looking at my car one says who's car is that.they still dont see me then i hear this salesmen say some PUNK!!! I say to myself did this piece of S---! just call me a punk a sec later he turns around and see's me and says its his car hey man really nice car i asked a quick question and left.bottom line i felt like a bitch i should have said something i guess i'm getting soft in my old age 5 years ago i would have knocked him out i'm 33 and married and have to much to loose.thats what i was thinking
You handled it well. You are the bigger man and he just lost a customer.
Sometimes its tough but "take the high road"
Steve great story i to have ear rings and nose ring and tattoos but where he was standing and where my car was u cant really tell ..but who cares thanks for all your input all u guys rule do not judge a book by its cover

If you are referring to Curry on Central Ave. I had a similar experience with them. When I was "doing my homework" and shopping for my car, Curry was one of the dealerships that I went to. When I walked into the showroom, 3 or 4 salesman were sitting at one desk. Looked like the ladies at tea time! Not one of them got up to approach me. I inspected the lone Corvette coupe sitting on the floor. One of them finally got off his fat ass, walked over to me and the first thing out of his mouth was, "If you're looking at the sticker, you probably can't afford it." I asked him if he had any idea who I was or if he had ever met me before and how he might happen to know that I couldn't afford to buy the car. He had a difficult time answering so I told him to "go back with the other ladies". I found the youngest salesman at the far end of the sales floor and sat at his desk. When I told him I was in the market for a new Z06. He promptly advised me that Curry's Z06 allocation was all used up and I should give Kerbeck a call. That's where I ultimately bought the car. Needless to say, Curry will NEVER see me again.

Good goin' Charlie.
You should have showed up in your new Z and gone inside and asked them if they sell keychains.
On Long Island back in the 80's when I was buying my first Vette, I went to ten dealers before I found one who would even talk to me...
They all thought I was to young to afford having a vette. Some even told me not to waste their time... I went back to one of them and beeped and waved to him after I got the car else where...

I get this all the time, I only have one tatto and no piercings, but its my age and now I let my hair grow out so its even worst, people dont believe I own that vette, and when they hear about my Ocean block condo they think I must be a drug dealer, people are just jealous they cant master what I have at 23, little they know I live at home, so if you safe some money and use condoms(can I say that ?), you can afford those things at 23 as well
