OK Guys,
If I understand you correctly, you would say that anyone who profits from selling something for what the market will pay is somehow evil. Last I checked, we live in a capitalistic system and there isn't any appropriate way to control pricing on items other than the free market. To take this a step further, is the guy charging $80K for a 63 Split Window a crook since the MSRP on that car was $3K? If you don't approve of the dealers charging more than list for the Z06 - don't buy it but don't be so naiive. Is your house worth more than you paid for it? Why? Because of the improvements you've made or because of the market? I suppose you should only sell it for what you paid plus improvements...

Come on guys! There is no such thing as "dealer gouging." Some cars sell for more than sticker price, and some sell for less, but in each case, it is the BUYER ---the guy with the money--- that decides the market value of the car.
If dealers could set selling prices, we'd all be paying $50K for Honda Civics.
Let's reverse the roles to examine the myth of dealer gouging.
Let's say you have a used Corvette that all the value guides say is worth $30,000, but you believe the car is worth more. Are you gouging when you ask $35,000? Are you gouging when you refuse to sell it for $30,000?
When you buy a new car for UNDER the sticker price, are you gouging the dealer?
When you sell your house, which has been professionally appraised for $200,000, and you receive two offers, one for $200,000 and one for $220,000, are you gouging when you accept the higher offer?
If today a dealer sold a Z06 at sticker price, the buyer could immediately sell the car for more, because the current market value of the car, as determined by the BUYERS, is higher than sticker.
If dealers believe their cars are worth over sticker, it is their right to refuse lower offers, and they are not gouging anyone by doing just that. (In fact, the only party being harmed is themselves, since the market value for the cars will continue to drop.)
P.S. I am not a dealer, just a patient consumer who just ordered a 2006 Ford GT for MSRP (instead of buying one last year for $100K over!)

I read some of the posts on this thread and then did a search on eBay for "2006 Z06". I was surprised at the number of dealers that are auctioning cars over MSRP that they don't actually have.
I wonder what would happen to the poor bastard that pays a $100,000 for one and it gets totalled a week later and the insurance company hands him a check for $70K?
I know he probably hopes he dies in the wreck!
I can't see paying $10 over sticker on a car that will depreciate 25k within the first 1-2 years. And this is assuming that the car has no first year glitches like the C5Z's did. As long as there are those folks that have to be the first on their blocks to own one, there will be cars that sell above sticker. In reality, it's the people that are willing to pay more than MSRP that are more to blame than the dealers...they're marking them up because someone will pay it.
The problem with having the "latest and greatest" is that there's a bullseye on the hood that every other mfgr is shooting for. Within a few short years it won't be so special anymore and someone will sell it to me for 40k

Sure thing! 42" plasmas were $10+ K 3 years ago. Now nobody wants `em - too small. 50" for 4 grand. So this will always happen with new stuff. Anxious people will ignore the price if they have the dough. The rest of us will bide our time and either buy the improved model, or buy new during the turndown - which usually prefaces the next generation.

You know what guys..as much as i talk bad about people who HAVE to have the car RIGHT NOW...i wish i was fortunate enough to have the money to waste like that. Cause i would do the same. If i saw this thread i would laugh. Then i'd walk outside, hop in my Z06 and go for a drive.
