I'm not going anywhere...like Cam said I was just sharing my experience.
Back when LS1.com and CamaroZ28.com were the ONLY related car sites on the net (4-5 years ago), the same growing pains were encountered. People got mad, ran off with a fire under their ass to start their own site and show the world they could run their own site and let members do everything they wanted. Of course, they eventually figured out that to truly be a BIG site, nationwide, etc... you had to have sponsors to help offset the operational costs. When the sponsors rolled in the realization that a "free for all" was not possible, and they, in turn, had to set up their own regulations. Once that was done, it was just like the other, larger, original site (LS1.com/CZ28.com) - so everyone left and went back, and the spur site failed.
There has been ONE exception to that rule, LS1Tech.com, and simply because ALL of the big technical knowledge fled at once, and started their own site.
I don't see this being a make it/break it issue with Z06Vette.com - reason? It's never been only about a "free for all" or porno, so losing the small additions to the site is no big deal.
I still feel strongly in my opinion though, even though this is a "Corvette Forum", it is, as mentioned above, a community, an extended family - and with that comes some enjoyment with posting off the wall things, jokes, the occasional cute chick with nice tits. I feel that an appropriately noted post with a topless girl is ok, I know others won't feel this way, that's just my opinion.
Therein lies the problem Jason, it is, but it requires SUBSTANTIAL work to the forum structure....which in its current state, would leave some nice security holes and make updates a REAL PITA.
The next release will allow this and certainly qualifies as a password protected area. For now however, we'll be putting a password on the "Over 18" link in the Banner Area......Exactly where the pics reside is not so much the issue, but rather the passworded protection, which has been resolved. If the next release allows us more/better protection and at the same time works for the members, we'll certainly consider that....
i understand. i wouldnt worry about not being able to "control" what is posted in the banner pics forum. if someone posts something that is inappropriate, it would be taken down in good time by a mod but all the while access to that forum would be protected by password. i agree with what you are doing JC and where you are going with this.
I appreciate it Jason, it's very hard to be in the position we're in right now. As Cam and Tamu have alluded to, we're at a point where we can really move forward, and I only want the best for the site and its members, I really do.
We're not doing this to appease a few people, we are making every effort to let the boys be boys, yet at the same time, provide a safe and learning environment for our sons and daughters.
Someone made the comment that the site is mainly surfed by adult males, and while that's probably true, we want everyone that visits the site to get a positive impression of the hobby and our members and what we're doing here.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, this site should be a support mechanism for our community. IOW, the gatherings (yes, the ones at Hooters too!), the carshows and the members getting together and meeting/helping one another are most important to us. This is one of the reasons I hate for the site to be referred to as a "forum" we're much more than that.
it's not about freedom of speech
Right.... Just to be clear, I alone did not create this policy.
The vendors did, to make more money.
I used think if you want a brotherhood, you go to z06vette.com and be who you are. If you want pure information/censorship/commerce driven construction/etc., go to the other forum.... But they are becoming very similair lately.
