Florida high speed venue

Hey y'all. With all the modified, supercharged, twin-turbo, cars out there on the streets I know you are looking to find out what it will really do. Most of us are aware of the standing mile events in Maxton N.C. and also in Texas. The Silver State open road event in Nevada is also popular. I am interested in competing in an event such as a standing mile or maybe just a standing half-mile. A event of this type would resemble 1/4 mile racing. However, there is only 1 car on the track at a time. The intent would be to seen how well your car performs in this category while providing a safer venue than a back road somewhere.

To this end, anyone out there have any connections to an airport, current track, whatever that could put on such an event? Maybe just a lead to an little known facility. We would need quite a bit of room for shut-down as I'm sure quite a few cars will be "flying".

I'm hoping we can find a proper place for such an event and get something started. ANyone know when else I can post this request that the other performance car folks would see it? Thinking of Vipers, Lambo's, Ferrari, Porsche, imports, etc. Maybe even have a little braggin' rights thing going with them.

I don't know their layout's right now but places that I have thought of are:

- Sebring Raceway
- Moroso Motorsports Park
- Titusville Airport
- Kissimmee Airport
- ??
- ??

Even if you don't have an input for a venue, please mark the poll so we can get an idea of interest.

Later ... Larry S.

Re: Florida high speed venue

Sebring is close to me and even closer (for 1/4 mile) is Bradenton Motorsports Park.

Re: Florida high speed venue

I have participated in a few High Performance Driving Events (HPDE) through my club: Mid Florida Corvette Club, and through them and with the blessing of the NCCC (for insurance purposes) I have travelled to St. Augustine to race on a street track laid out just for us. It was a low-speed event (max speed is 80 MPH) which tests your ability to keep your horses under the hood under control and negotiate the course in the fastest time... one car at a time. I liked that. But now I want to move up to the high speed HPDE and there is one coming up in October that I was made aware of. It is not NCCC sanctioned but there will be liability insurance provided to cover all drivers/riders. You need only a helmet and seat belts. The track, located in Starke, FL , looks great and the cost for the day is $250 including lunch. I have been told that the format is such that you can pass people but only in certain locations as to try and minimize the chance for "paint swapping". I will try and include a picture of the track. Anyone interested I can give you the info.

Re: Florida high speed venue

I have participated in many HPDE events at tracks such as Watkins Glen, NH INternational, Moroso, Nashville Superspeedway, and they are great. Go out and learn to drive your car fast and safe.

The event in Starke sounds like this type of event, and they are great fun.

Some sort of standing mile event or Open Road Race event is a different animal, and requires quite a bit of setup, but they can be done. You might want to contact the organizers of the Silver State event in Nevada or the Road Runner events in Fort Stockton, TX to see what it takes to set something like that up.

Try Deland Florida. The airport is a huge old WW2 facility, plenty of runways. During bike week they have "run what you brung" motorcycle drag races. Real low key, few rules. We ran vintage road races there for 5 years. Town was friendly.

Re: Florida high speed venue

I clicked "No" on the poll - not because I don't like the idea, but because I'm already satisfied with what is available.

Check out this post I made in the HPDE section of the Racing board of the forum:

Daytona HPDE Dec 2008

I ran that HPDE at Daytona last year and it's a really fun event with opportunity for big speed on the high-banked oval, and especially the straight sections coming off the high-banks. I couldn't run WOT on the banks with stock tires, but I could easily do 170 in a stock C6 Z06 on OE tires (that's what I was doing down the front stretch across the start/finish line before braking to turn into the infield twisties). This year on race rubber and different suspension setup I'll do faster than that.

In addition to that 3 day Audi Club event in December, PBOCMotorsports is having an event at Daytona that has a 2 day "education" HPDE on Nov 1-2.

Although running at Daytona is not a flat out WOT on a straight-away for fastest flying speed you can get out of your car, I guarantee that it will satisfy your "need for speed"!!

I'm signed up for both those events, so hope to see you here (I live in Daytona, so I can't pass up the cheap travel expenses and accommadations!!!).

Bob

Re: Florida high speed venue

Thanks for the replies guys.

I already have done some HPDE (since 1996) in the Z as well as my '95 Trans Am. I have also drag raced motorcycles and cars for over 30 years.

What I am looking for is like is a venue in Florida that could be used for a standing mile or even a 1/2 mile. Since both will take a lot of room for shutdown, it will most likely need to be a airport. Just looking for ideas as to a possible location. I'd like to see how fast the Z will go from a standing start. I already know she'll hit over 180, but that is from a running start.

Thanks .. Larry S.
