01 vs. 02 for used purchase?

friend is looking to purchase a z to satisfy his hp needs in about 6 months, i was wondering as we talked about it, if their is any reason to go with the 02 over the 01? i know the 02 has the hud and such, but hes going to be changing the heads/cam in either and exhuast.

so knowing this, do u guys feel that it might just be better to save the money and get the 01...

also, hes nervous about the 01 oil consumption problem...should he be concerned with this?

A used '01 on the market is probably an oil guzzler!
Check it out closely before buying

I would purchase a 2001 z06 from a forum member here or buy a 2002 z..

You don't want to bother with the unknown.. (JMO)

If he is going to open it up and do a head and cam change, I would go with the one that he gets the best price on. Most 01s do NOT consume oil. Even if he buys an 01 that dos show oil consumption, he can leverage that for a better price. He can then do the ring work when he has the engine open for the head & cam work.

I agree with 2001Z06 in that, if you are going to get inside the engine you might want to fix the rings yourself.

As for the statistics, the oil consumption poll indicates that 51.01% of all z06s burn at least a quert of oil every 3k miles. I think the statistics might have been different if the poll were limited to '01 Z06s.

I'd get at least an '02. There are many more changes on the '02 that make it worthwhile over an '01. Did you know that the '02 even has a tighter turning radias over an '01?

You can run a service history from the VIN that will tell you right away if the car has been in for oil consumption concerns? If it was rebuilt?? How the situation was left?, possibly accidents/paintwork(although not always) etc. I have been following the Z market on EBay as I know everyone else has. You can find a REAL nice, low mileage 2002 for right around $40-$42k, maybe even under. And you may be able to steal an 01' for mid-upper 30's. I would say go with an 02', just my opinion. IS CARRZY's car still for sale. That looks like a real gem. At $41k its a steal with only 5k miles or something like that. Try to buy from a forum member, at least you know it was taken care of. I have seen some BEAT Z's around my area, obviously ownerd by non-enthusiast's. Win/Win buying from the forum......

My Z is for sale!

Have your friend check out my '01 Z06 here

My car had the piston re-ring performed at 6600 miles and has not burned a drop since! It has 9000 miles, and is in pristine condition throughout! You can also follow this ebay link to see more pictures of the car. My asking price of $37,400 is significantly less than what you'd pay for a new one (even at a hefty dicount) and easily less than what most '02 are going for! Plus, there are no hidden doc fees, handling fees and what not!

Buying a car from a forum member is a cool way to go. I also had the re ring done and my car hasn't used a drop of oil either in 2000 miles..

Any one who picks up Raj's car is making a smart move.

Nice car!
