Hello everyone, just wanted some feedback with your experiences.
First of all, the transmission is NOISY as hell. I know that most of it is normal, but lately a noticed a different noise. When coasting in gear, WITH the clutched depressed in 2nd, the transmission makes a weird noise, like metal parts flying all over, LOL. And when I do the same in 1st, coasting in 1st gear WITH the clutch depressed, it makes like a whinning noise. Very strange. All this happens at speeds around 20mph. Anyone else have these noises? Starting to worry. Please share your thoughts and experiences.
And yes, window, exhaust and plastic rattles are also present, at 1500 miles, LOL. Part of owning a high-performance car. I really don't mind the noises, makes me feel like a RACER, LOL.
Most likely, the noises are normal and you're just noticing them for the first time. Some Z transmissions are noisier than others, but even the 4+3's made the same sounds. They can be scary if you're not expecting them. Clutch position, fluid temp, and when and how you shift can influence them.
If you have concerns, try either driving another one or having somebody familiar with the car listen to yours, as has been suggested. You don't have to go to the dealer you got it from. If another dealer has a tech that specializes in vettes, and yours doesn't, you can go there.

Never had any of these in my 02. I would take a tech for a ride to have them hear your tranny noise. Although the tranny is noisey, I have heard some say it's the driveshaft bouncing around the torque tube.
But if it persists...get it checked out.
My 2004 has done all those things since I brought it home. It all seems to be normal. Whirring, clanking, etc.., different noises with clutch in/out. 11K miles and no issues that I am aware of. I am used to it and ignore them now.

Some noises could be coming from the posi differential rather than from the tranny, although if the nature of the noise changes in different gears, that does suggest tranny.
I find I can definitely hear driveline noise when the car is idling in neutral with clutch out, and that's due to the torque tube. The apparent source of those noises is the center console, not the rear.

Wow, do you regularly drive on cobblestones? My 2004's interior is silent. No squeaks, rattles, clunks or squeals, and that's after 5,000 miles including a bone-rattling trip on 3 miles of unpaved road into Bodie, CA.
My tranny does make some some strange sounds at times, whining and gear noise, seems normal. But then if you want to hear noise, row thru the gears with a Rock Crusher. :oo:

I have about 7K miles on my '04, and I have absolutely no squeaks or rattles of any kind, even when going over railroad tracks and expansion joints-I guess mine was built on the right day?
As for whirrs and other assorted mechanical noises, I couldn't say. Ever since I had the Stingers installed, all I hear is exhaust rumble. Best noise cancellation system I ever invested in
Seriously, I do hear sounds and noises, but I always attributed it to the engine being in front, tranny in rear, and a lot of torque being driven between them.
I find it hard to believe that anyone has a Z that doesn't make some sort of odd noises, rattles, etc... I've learned to deal with them as it has been said before- these are high performance vehicles not luxury sedans. I've learned what noises are "normal" (mostly from this great forum) and tune them out so that I can enjoy the car for what it is.
I've had to re-learn a lot and reset expectations along the lines of build, fit, and finish when I got mine. Don't get me wrong, it's a helluva performance car and I love mine but I don't go comparing interior ammenities and such with a Lexus- it's a street legal race car!!! My new attitude: drive it, if it breaks there's someone out there who can fix it!
