sometimes I still scare myself. The car can jump sideways when not suspecting. Many times I think back and make notes of how not to drive it. Good luck and be careful if you buy it.
Originally posted by DavidGP Your GPA and your intellectual capacity does not mean sh@# behind the wheel..........My question to you is......If you plan on attending Med school, how are you going to handle payments for a Z if Med school does not allow you to have a job due to the heavy load of school work, which leads me to believe you are getting help from an alternative means. That is not my business by the way and if you are getting help....thats great. To make a business profitable you must put lots of time into it to make it happen, But you know more about your expectations than I do.
Good luck.
i'm not in med school yet. i'm a second year at UCI. got two more years to go. my goal and dream is med school. and i wish i had an alternate source
man i think this got a bit out of control. when i say 5 accidents i dont mean bad ones. i mean "fender beners"
for example:
first one - in gas station, didn't look in rear view mirror and reversed. banged the other guys car behind me. total cost both cars about $1k
second one - made a quick right turn but wheel didn't turn enough and the front drivers side hit the car stopped at the perpendicular light trying to make a left turn total cost about $1300
my only real accident was on a rainy day when my dumbass was on a street i didnt know too well and a sharp right curve came up and i lost control.
my purpose of stating the accidents was for insurance reasons and not to say i'm an idiot as many of you have taken me to be
Personally, I didn't think you were an idiot when you said 5 accidents, but I thought "wow 5 accidents, good luck on insurance". In the insurance company's eyes, you are still labeled as a high risk driver. Combine that with your age, future Z06, and other factors and it will ensure that you have a sky high insurance premium for many years to come. Like I said before, if you have the cash and can handle it then it would be a good idea, but if it were me I'd wait until your accidents get off your record.
Okay my two cents. When I was 19 I was told by older guys who had vettes, not to get one, that I'd probably kill myself in one. I listened to them, and having done the med school gig and residency, buying a house and raising a family, I can now look back and say they were right.... I would have done myself some serious bodily harm if I got one. Theres no greater education in life then experience and maturity. You have many years ahead of you ... slow down a little and enjoy them. The Z06 will still be there when your ready for it. (Sorry if this comes across as a sermon.. just the facts of life)
Whatever you decide to do, and there has been a good amount of advice in this thread. Just PLEASE remember that the Z is for real a monster. It is a handling fool, but so strong that you might feel it does not handle well. It is not just a
"hot car" it is a true monster. Whatever you decide, stick around here, wonderful people that will in fact have true concern about you. If you do go for the car, remember that there are a lot of people here that you can count on for advice and help. Drive safe, good luck in school.
I also agree with "Z06LS6" about the "maturity factor". I would assume that most of us are in our MORE mature years - but I still get "stupid crazy" some of the time when I drive this car!
I own an insurance agency . . . and if I were to advise you (even if you can AFFORD the insurance rates) . . . statistically you need more seat time behind the wheel.
pooh, a large dealer in long beach has 10 zo6s- all colors except red. so they are around, but you will not get $4-5k discount. just check out gmbuypower.com
pooh, I am also 19 and attend UCD. Much like you, I am also hoping to go to med school upon graduation. Although I have been to two driving schools at Bondurant in Az and have been driving fairly high performance cars since I was 15, the Z is a sh!tload to handle. I would highly recommend a driving school if the funds are available. The other part about payments, luckily my dad is into performance cars too so we kind of share the cars until I have sufficient funds to start making purchases of my own. I have never driven an M3 or a C5 but I would imagine these cars require a lot of self discipline as well. I think no matter what route you go it just takes responsibility and self-restraint. The Z06 is one of the funnest cars I have ever driven though. Good luck with your decision.

I agree with DavidGB. You can start off with a pony car like a camaro or mustand and then once u finish college get your Z. I had a 94 Z28 throughout college and while I was safe with it I did do stupid stuff and was lucky many times. Now that I did graduate college I went and bought my 03 Zo6.
I think most here would agree that we don't want to deprive you of the enjoyment of owning and driving a Z06, (we have no control over you, so we can't really deprive you of anything), but we are mostly concerned for your safety as well as those around you. Speaking from experience, when I was 16 and a new driver I looked at ultra high performance cars and often wondered why the old- slow moving- lack of driving skills guys always had them, instead of quick thinking, good looking studs like me who would really appreciate driving them to the limit. Now, 36 years later and having owned and driven many high performance cars I can see why I didn't get one early on. I probably wouldn't be here today. Accidents are called accidents because they did not take place intentionally, otherwise they would be called "intentionals"...LOL All it takes is a moment of carelessness, inattentiveness, recklessness, lack of skills, poor decisions, or any combination of those and the recipe for disaster is present. Looking at the minor fender benders you had already, see which factors were contributors to each, now think about how you could have changed the outcome for better or worse.
We, (myself included) normally take driving for granted, it's such a part of our everyday lives that we don't give it a second thought, we just hop in and go, no planning, just get to where we are going, and get back. Most of the time it works, but when it doesn't, people are hurt or killed... the worst part is, most of the time they [accidents] could have been prevented.
Sorry for carrying on like this, but I just wanted to let you know that you should be able to enjoy a car like the Z06, but with it comes a very high price in terms of responsibility.
What ever happens, enjoy and keep up the good academic work.
vettepilot
one must respect the power of any vehicle especially if it produces 400+ HP and 400+ lb/ft of torque! With maturity comes responsibility. You can have the best time of your life in teh Z and it can also be your last ride. All it takes is money to buy a car... to respect the power is a whole different story.
man this is not good. seems like fate to me. but the guy who was sellin his 02 EB Z06 ended up selling it eailier this week since i took so long. My luck.
time to start calling dealers again.
ohh yeah also i would love to get a new but the extra $10k would hurt. Around here in the LA area there is no such thing as a $5k discount. maybe 1k discount but thats hard too. i even talked to Bob Benedix and he said the same thing. he said that $42k for a uses 02 with 12k miles is a great buy in the LA area. Seems that there is a high demand for Z06's in this area so to find one is hard.
and the dealership in the LA area with the 10+ vettes doesn't have any EB ones and most of theres are 50th ones which i dont want and in the red color which i cant see myself in
