It seems that if we do this we ought to also leave the windows down, doors unlocked and keys in the ignition with a Mobil SpeedPass attached to the key ring....

Maybe throw in a credit card for em too....

Thoughts...

I actually bought the bypass, but have not installed it. Seems to be very few lockups anymore? I think the plant must have made a change due to the problems encountered in the past years. So the bypass stays in the box.

Call me crazy, but I don't see how the column lock is going to stop a thief anyway. The only people it's stopped so far are the Vette owners.

I'll take the bypass as I prefer it to sitting on the side of the road for 3 hours waiting on a flatbed. Not to mention the additional damage the dealer is likely to do to the car when it's in for repair.

Better safe than sorry I think.

I am with SS on this one, as one of the first to install the bypass about a year ago I would do it again, after I saw 2 new 2000 Vettes coming off a flat bed and scraping the hell out of the cars I said no thanks to that happening to my car. If a theif was stealing you car it would be a couple of seconds difference with or without a locking column. Did you know that you can take the wheel and turn it real hard side to side while the lock is on and break the column lock, I have seen this done at a junk yard with a 99 Vette. The only person that the column lock stops in the owner, sad but true.
The bottom line is that your car is no harder to steal with the column lock bypass or without.

To tell you the truth, I haven't heard of one ZO6 owner having the bypass problem either.

Does anyone know if this has happened yet or not?

I will pass until I hear a few complaints.

I will take my chances. I am more concerned with getting a flat tire.

Right! If it ain't broke don't fix it!

Lets hear all the column lock problems from the Z06'ers...well?

If it is very wide spread, I think installing it to fix it would be well worth it, but so far I have yet to see any direct posts about this problem being wide spread or as significant a problem as it was.

No bypass for me yet. Also have not seen where a Z06 was afflicted. Mine is never out of my sight when not home and I have yet to lock it.

The Z06 and the standard C5, if you want to put in those terms share most of the same electrical parts, and most of the column lock problems are when the weather is warmer out as SS said. I am going to install a bypass for a customer of mine so I want to see if they changed the part for 01, or if it's still the same. I will post after I do the install.

I had a 83 C4 die half in the drive half in the street the first morning home.

Never had an electrical issue on any Vette since.

You guys have me over a barrel on this one. The thought of a wrecker hauling my baby off. I'll be up all night now...

I look at it this way. If GM had fixed the problem, they would have put the word out. Maybe not an all out recall, but the word of the imprved lock would be out. Those that do have the column lock problem get it fixed with exactly the same part that failed, only to have the problem happen again.

If you notice on the Corvette Forum, there also have not been any probelms with the column lock happening to any C5's lately. Probably because half the C5's are in hibernation and also becuase it's generally cool across the country. When the weather heats up and the locking pins start expanding, and the Vettes are on the road again, we'll be seeing the rash of column locks happening.

I'm a firm believer that I'd rather have insurance before the accident then after. What good will it do you then?

Here's a challenge to those of you who won't install the bypass. Will you actually adimit after stating that you would never install it, that your column locked up?

Granted I only have a little over 1000 miles. Yet I will not get a bypass untill it is a problem, Kinda like the trans overtemp... Untill it is a huge problem, I will not worry about it.

Now that we have our own Forum, we will be better and more quickly able to identify problems unique to the Z. My biggest gripe about the C-Forum is that people often do not identify their problems with their cars relative to year, model and tranny. Don't get me wrong in that I have learned a great deal from everyone on the Forum but it would be easier to track applicability of problems if we knew which cars it was happening to.
