Break in question from a new Z owner.

So I picked it up Thursday night with 4 miles on it and I'm up to 350 now. Anything I should keep in mind for proper break-in other than the General's 500 mile requirement?

I made it to 500 tonight. I didn't do anything over 3000 for the first 250. I hit 3500 a few times, maybe 4500 twice or so after 350, so I think I should be good. None of that was under full throttle load anyhow. Thanks for the advice. After I hit 500 miles, I hit 125 mph. That didn't take long, lol. The car actually scares me. I love it.

Wow that's conservative! Not saying it's right or wrong. I gradually built up to the 6.2K mark (never floored it to get there) so at 500 I let her rip. Runs beautifully and doesn't use a drop of oil even though I run it up to redline regularly and typically shift just past 4K when I want to have fun. Congrats and good luck with the new Z.

Bought mine over the summer with 38 miles on it. When I told a friend what car I bought, he tells me, "I took that stock number out for a test drive, got it up to 120MPH. I drove the s&%t out of it for 1/2 an hour."

I called the dealer PISSED! They promised me (OF course what else would they say) that these engines are built to take that, not to worry.

I have 1065 miles now, all fairly normal. I'm watching oil consumption but too early to tell. The car runs great by my standards, but what do I know. This was my 1st Vette.

Enjoy both ends, hard driving and careful driver. The car is a better car than we are drivers.

This is all just my opinion, of course, but I say "get in it and drive it".

It doesn't need a break-in (if I recall, the owner's manual even says so). Very few modern engines do nowadays. Mechanical tolerances are tight enough there's very little need for any "seating" or "burnishing".

I flogged my 98 Coupe from the day I got it, no problem (54K mi). I've flogged my 02 Z since I got it, no problems (20K). Before that, I flogged by 94 LT1 Z28 from the day I got it, no problems (47K). (note: "flogged" does not equal "abused". I wait a few 100mi before I really start "laying in to it").

In my experience, an engine's either good (in which case it doesn't matter if it gets break-in), or it's bad (and no amount of break-in will save it).

The two most important considerations ... no hard braking for the first few hundred miles, and varying speed and rpm as much as possible. The reason for the latter is more about ending up with a quieter drivetrain than anything else.

After putting your car thru general driving conditions for about 500 miles. Change the oil in the engine, install a magnetic plug from GM dealership for about $2.50

That's what I did. No leaks no oil consumption either. 7 qrts of oil including filter change will do it.

I then have put 95% of the remaining miles on the track. My 02 is getting faster each year at 879 miles it's running a best 12:30 at 116 mph w/bfg/drag radials. I don't beat it just drive it like I were street racing but safer on a strip.

I live next to the track so it's just minutes away. Have fun and drive the car in comp/mode.
