In Grand Sports I, the award didn't go to the Champions, but was very well earned by Dave Stevenson for the second year in a row. Stevenson, Crew Chief for Powell Motorsport, was a key ingredient in making the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 competitive against the many Porsches, Saleens, BMWs, and other exotic machinery. Powell Motorsport took on the great challenge of preparing two Corvettes again this season for an assault on the Championship.
Stevenson's work saw the #11 Sunoco Encompass Powell Motorsport effort score only one mechanical failure in ten races; a remarkable feat. With four wins and eight podiums the team was one of the most successful efforts in the GSI class.
