I brought my car into the dealer to have the wiper motor and gas guage fixed. While it was there, some idiot backed into it. They say it's a little scratch, but the back qtr. panel needs to be painted! I'm about to go look at it, but I needed to calm down first. How much does this effect the value of the car? Shouldn't they give me some compensation. I think full retail when I trade it in on an '05.
I agree with your 100%, but you will be lucky to get a decent repair. You might want to consider taking it to you own paint shop. Most dealer paint/body shops aren't that good.

That sucks that you're going to have some downtime, but if they re paint it for you, and maybe throw in some free oil changes or something wouldn't that be good? Having a scratch in your paint only affects the amount of money you could get for your car RIGHT NOW. Once the scratch is repaired, good as new!
I would suggest you keep all info (from dealership) explaining what happened and a few pictures of the scratch, so when it comes time to sell your car, hopefully potential buyers won't freak out and leave because they think the car's been in a bad accident...
Might not help much, but you never know...
Of course, if you can get some kind of compensations from the dealership, that would be even better, but I think you'll have to do some serious fighting to get that...
Make sure to ask and look at some of the resent painted cars in the lot that are close to the same color as yours. Make sure they can blend and get the color mix right.
My Z was just overnight at the dealer and this was my biggest nighmare I got it back without a scratch.Sorry about your mishap hope it gets resolved to you satisfaction. Greg

Sorry your car got scratched, but come on.....they will laugh you out on your butt if you want full retail on any car on a trade...my husband was an auto adjuster and a body shop manager...and my car got hit in a parking lot, hit and run. Well, if the car is black then its super easy to compound and blend or even just compound out a scratch. My whole rear quarter was changed and you could not tell.
I certainly didn't say crap when I sold the car.....it was as good as new. Basically all the panels on the car are throw away. You get damage, if not satisfied with the fix then get a new panel and blend the paint.
If you lucked out and have a black, red or white car then you will not have a problem, except if you get a good repair, the paint on the repair might actually look better than some of the orange peel stuff on many cars from the factory.
Look, take it from someone who has been to hell and back over a car with GM and a dealer, to the point of lawyers and police.....just make sure the repair is nice and you can't tell.....and then be happy.

I'd seek legal action and talk to the general manager. Take a digital camera and plenty of photos. Also get the name of the cretin who backed into your car. You can file a claim. If he left the scene, its a hit and run. That's the law - I don't care how minor.

What so they can damage the car again? Once it's repaired I'd never use that dealership again. Better yet stay away from all dealerships service departments, unless it's warranty work (only if you have to).
The guy I bought my Z from had his original Museum delivery Z with 8000 miles on it at a dealership in Houston. Someone backed something into the driver's side door. The damage was so bad they gave him a new 2003 Z off the show room floor. I think he was heartbroken and sold the new Z on ebay just to get rid of it. He explained to me about the "bonding" he did with his old car delivering it at the museum, driving it home, etc. We love our Corvettes and when something happens it is like something happening to a member of the family. Good luck with your car.

Well, I went to the dealer last night to see the damage and it really was not that bad. It was a nick on the bottom corner of the bumper. It does need to be painted, but the manager of the body shop seems to know what he is doing and was very nice about the entire thing even though he has nothing to do with the accident. He said he guarantees no one will notice it and the work comes with a lifetime guarantee. For the compensation, they are going to detail the car inside/out, gave me a free oil change, and a $500 voucher for my next car. I can basically go to any of their dealerships, work out a deal and than use the voucher. This should work out good since it is time for a new car for the wife. I am very satisfied with how the dealer treated me. It really was not their fault. It was actually the rental car company that is on their lot who backed into my car. They also were very accomodating. They gave me a nice SUV to drive, they pay for the gas, two free tanks of gas for my car, a free weekend rental of anything I want and 20% off any future rentals.
Of course I would rather none of this happened, but it was just an accident and everything seems to be ok, so I feel better.
The funny part and I say that sarcastically, is that the car still is not fixed for the original problem. The part for the gas guage is on back order, so I will have to bring the car back!
