engine bay light wont shut off

About 6 weeks ago I changed the ugly yellow light under the hood of my c5 Z06 to a clean looking pure white led. Everything was working fine.

2 Weeks ago it stopped shutting off. When I exit and lock the vehicle it it bright for about 15min, then it dims. The dim light never completely shuts off.

Correct me if I am wrong, but to my knowledge there is no "squat switch" or "Pin switch" to indicate if the hood is up or closed. It is a timer correct?

I simply unplugged the light, but I would like to have it working again without any battery drain. Any Ideas?

Thanks

P.S. this is my first post so don"t burn me

Re: engine bay light wont shut off

I don't know what to tell you. The other day I was drying my car with a leaf blower and a weird anomaly occurred. When I aimed the blower toward the light, it turned off. I tried to shake it with my hand and it stayed on steady. Only when I forced the air by the light is when it turned off.

The only way to know is to see the lighting circuit schematic.

Re: engine bay light wont shut off

It shows a switch for the under hood lamp. Then an arrow that says older production vehicles. I wonder what is classified as older production these days.

I was trying to figure out what tells the light to come on. Is it the initial pull of the hood release lever? There has to be a switch somewhere. . . .

I never checked for where it was, but there's an on-off switch that is actuated by opening/closing the hood. - even when everything, including ignition, is "off"

Left open, a timer shuts the light off after "a while"

Does anyone know where this switch is located? I keep looking, I must be blind.

Re: engine bay light wont shut off

The IPC ( dash controller) monitors voltage load for lighting

When doors are opened the IPC senses the voltage load via a relay turns the voltage on for a set time and then shuts down.

It may be the hood light case has a internal switch that completes the positive voltage circuit by the angle of the hood like a mercury switch.

Re: engine bay light wont shut off

I have an 04 and the light comes on by a mercury switch in the light.
It is then timed off I believe after 10 minutes, or when you close the hood.
You would need to hook up a manual switch if you want to keep your LED.

Re: engine bay light wont shut off

I'd like to see what they use now.

Quote:

Which Vehicles have Mercury Switches?

Generally, American-made cars and trucks manufactured before 2003 or foreign made vehicles manufactured before 1992 will likely contain these mercury switches. Domestic models beyond 2003 will not contain any switches containing mercury. Most “Big 3” vehicles sampled in a Minnesota pilot removal project had at least one standard or optional hood or trunk switch containing mercury. Removing or replacing the switches with ball-bearing switches is a key step in reducing the amount of mercury released into the environment.

Battery positive voltage is applied at all times to the MONITORED LD relay 37 coil and switch side. The BCM applies a ground to the MONITORED LD relay 37 coil side, energizes the relay and closes the switch contacts. The BCM then allows battery positive voltage to the MONITORED LD fuse 2 and the underhood lamp. When the underhood is opened, its switch closes providing a ground circuit, and the underhood lamp illuminates.
