While I agree, if you really want to get one, any dealer can sell it to you before your original warranty period expires. You may want to check the forum dealers here and possibly other web sites, since the price charged varies dramatically.
I bought one for piece of mind. I purchased a GMPP extended warranty from Ken Fitchner at Fitchner Chevrolet. I could not be happier with the service. They are top notch.
Could anyone give ballpark pricing on this type of warranty? When I purchased my 04 Z06 I was offered a dealer backed warranty for $3500 for 60K and 5 year coverage of everything. I was quoted a GMPP at $8000 for the same warranty. I declined both.
With my 3 year old ZR1 I got a warranty from a dealer with same terms for $1300. I am interested in an extended warranty, but the cost seemed out of line locally. The warranty on the ZR1 was worth it for its electronics, did not need it for the mechanicals until 90K miles(clutch).
Wish GM would get in step with their new car warranties like some of their foreign competitors.
When I bought my z16, i bought a GMPP warranty for under $1k for 6 years and ( i can't remember the miles right now)...
BUT, I was under the impression that the warranty runs in parallel with the GM warranty (3 years 36kmiles) with the benefit being that if i bought the GMPP at the time i bought the car it would cost me less $$$ but still would start day 1 i owned the car... is this the case? or did i screw up and should have bought the GMPP at 36 months minus 1 day and paid a little more money.
I have 60 days from the day i bought the GMPP to cancel it for a full refund which I'm considering...
This is part of the e-mail I received from Ken about a warranty for my '03 Yukon XL Denali:

so if you bought a GMPP 36month/36kmiles plan 2 months after you bought your car and you now have 2000 miles on it are you now covered to 38months and 38kmiles or is it retroactive and the 2k miles and 2 months additional?
maybe this is a better question to ask?
if i want to cover a car that has 36k miles on it and is in the 35th month of ownership for an additional 36k miles and 36 months do i need to buy a 72k miles/72 month GMPP or a 36/36 and what difference in price can i expect for not having bought it when i bought the car?

I would agree with Jimmy if you intend to do a "heavy" mods (ie-cam,S/C, turbos, etc) on your car. If however you intend to remain "stock" or do "minor mods" (ie-change the air intake) then an extended warranty is probably a good thing. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't spent the money on one, since I am certain that GM would fight me tooth and nail if I were to have a "major" engine/trans related issue, considering the mods I have done to date.

My 2003 Yukon XL Denali has 35,490 miles. I just purchased an extended warranty. Since I drive about 25,000 miles/year and will be replacing the truck next year, I bought a 12 month/20,000 miles policy. This covers my truck 12 add'l months or until 55,490 miles.
For an add'l 36 months/36,000 miles, here is the quote I received (terms, deductible, price).
also be careful what you buy, there are 3 levels of GMPP, and some people are getting the Basic Guard for what appears to be a cheap price, but don't confuse it with them getting Major Guard which is more expensive and bumper to bumper (not including the clutch or wear/tear stuff). Also, if you buy the warranty as the car gets older the price goes up, significantly.
