I just bought a 60/75/0 warranty for $3250. That's 60 months additional warranty from the date I bought the warranty, an additional 75K miles in addition to the miles that were on the car when I purchased the warranty, and zero deductible for repairs. They wrote the contract stating my Z had 23,999 miles so I'm good to Feb of 2011, and/or 98,999 miles.
I called Fichtner and Downing first and they both quoted me that same price, which my local dealership matched.
If you buy the warranty when the car is new, you get the best price. As soon as you drive it off the lot, the price goes up.
You should purchase the warranty before the car has 24,000 miles and you're still inside the 36 month factory warranty. It almost doubles after 24K miles, and once you're outside the 36K or 36 months factory warranty, it's too late for the GMPP.
I bought the warranty because I don't plan on modding it and I put about 20K+ miles on it a year. It's really a crap shoot, like any insurance, but it gives me piece of mind. While I might not have to spend that much on repairs, then again it could be much more than that. I had an '03 with a GMPP and it paid for itself in a year and a half.
Besides, you get towing, fuel service, tire service and a free rental if the car is in the shop for more than 2 hrs. While it's not worth it to some, all that is worth it to me.
