I have just been over to Sweden on holiday and here in the UK we have Unleaded Premium fuel which is 95 Octane. The US has 91 or 93 Premium (I can't remember which). Well I tried 98 Otcane in Sweden and it set the Check Engine Light!!
We have 98 Octane in the UK but I never tried it. I tried it in Sweden when at 1/4 full and filled up (only 'cos the 95 wasn't working).
After about 60 miles the Check Engine Light came on.
Checked the manual which said it might happen if you change Octane or Fuel Brand.
Refilled car with 95 Octane and immediately the Check Engine Light went out.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Life is not a dress rehearsal........
I ran 100 and 104 octane unleaded racing gas on the stock PCM numerous times with no check engine light.
Yours is the first time I've heard of a check engine light coming on for fuel.
Is it leaded fuel?
Are the octane ratings in Europe the same as in the US? Remember that some years ago (can't remenmber when it was, sometime since the 70s....I was in college then and have an excuse why I can't remeber!) we changed from the older (and higher value) Motor Octane to the average of Motor Octane and Research Octane. As I recall, this caused a reduction in reported octane value by around 5 points. You may notice on the octane label on some gas pumps indictaes (R+M)/2. Could this be part of the issue??
The Octane rating we use in the UK is 95 RON and the car works fine with this no issues at all. My 1996 LT4 has always run fine on 95 as well.
One possiblility according to the manual is that if the gas cap is not fixed securely, it can casue fuel vapour escape which sets off the Check Engine Light. Therefore, it could be coincidence with the 98 Fuel, but I don't think so.
