How is the oil consumption problem with the 01s proven?
Obviously with a dipstick But seriously, if you have an 01 model about to come off warranty can you do a leak down test? What proof does GM require to repair or replace for oil burning issues?
They will want to do an oil consumption test. They will fill the oil and then have you come back to check the oil level every 500 miles for 3000 to 5000 miles. There is a form they will give you and each time the oil is checked a notation as to the level of the oil at that time is made.
According to GM's own documentation "excessive oil usage" is defined as more than one quart used per every 2000 miles.
If you're almost out of warranty, don.t worry about it, but make make sure you get them to start the consumption testing before the warranty is out. Any issue that is brought to the dealer's attention under warranty stays under warranty until the problem is resolved, even if you are out of warranty. So long as it's within reasonable time they still have to take care of it. Also, if youi drive in "Competitive Driving" mode it seems to use up more oil. If you think you have an oil consumption problem drive with that on all the time and it should help you.
My dealer was easy... the vette tech checked to make sure the oil was full, noted the miles, and sent me packing. I came back when it was convenient and only one time! Car goes in tomorrow morning for the re-ring (already had the valley cover replaced).
My dealer was even easier. Had 4500 miles on my 01, went into dealer about the rear fascia and tailpipes being covered in oily soot. They took it in and two days later...it was back and no more oil burning! Then I traded it in on an 02.
When did most of you notice oil problem?. I've got 5500 miles and only drive her on weekends. If it's nice. I only have the Z for a couple months,I guess I should start watching the oil use now.The good thing is I got an extended warrenty till 12/2006.
