June 03 Motor Trend, Z06 vs Viper vs Mosler? vs, vs, vs....

Don't ask me how I got this issue early.....(ok/ ask/ but, don't get upset when I tell you : )

Anyway, I just got done reading the main article(s) in the June 03 Motor Trend (cover article: "SPEEDING Ten ultra machines, Five miles of track. One foot, flat to the floor"

First off/ I LOVE THIS issue...

Here are the 10 cars (in order that MT listed them on pg. 63)

Z06
Dodge Viper SRT-10
Ferrari 575M Maranello F1
Ford F-150 SVT Lightning
Ford Mustang SVT Cobra
Jaguar XKR
Lamborghini Murcielago
Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMG
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution
Mosler MT900 Photon

OK/ first question MT!... WTF is a stripped down racing version of the Mosler doing in this comparision? ( Lexan windshield, six-sp. sequential manual gearbox AND "cheater slick racing tires w/ about 1/16" treads showing" )...
obviously, this UNDER 2000 lb (dry) car kicked MAJOR bootie...
but, come on MT?....give me a break! /
THIS CAR ISN'T EVEN GOVT. CERTIFIED FOR STREET USE..
ok/ enough of my ranting....

here are the highlights...

Good? The Z06 did great overall (as usual
The Interesting? Why are the headlights of the Z06 ON...during the day? (could this be part of the reason the Top Speed came in at 174mph? MT's quote: "Aerodynamically limited...true top speed"
More interesting? Besides the Mosler/ the Viper did AWESOME (the Z06 did tie it in the 600 ft. slalom however)..oh/ the Lamborghini did awesome as well/ but, I'm sorry, that car just doesn't do it for me (even at $284,000!)

Anyway/ when you guys get this issue/ PLEASE tell me if I'm off base about the Mosler being included here////
AND tell me what you think of the article(s)

Cool. That Viper is crazy fast! The Z06 put up a decent number too. What did the Mustang run in the 1/4? Thanks!

Well if they tested the Z06 with the headlights up, do you think they knew enough to turn off the Traction Control??? I would have expected the Viper to win the 1/4, but not by 7/10ths.

so, i'm assuming....

Z06 crazy...the mustang ran a 13.01 @ 110.69

oh....nobody asked about the mosler...

11.02 @ 126.88

I'd like to see an endurance race between a stock 405hp Z06 and and new 500hp Viper in say a Daytona or Talladega speedway - the big-block Viper would A) most likely could not handle the length of the race and B) the Vette would waste it in gas mileage alone! Besides, the hardtop Z06 has much better rigidity in the frame and still costs $nearly $30k less.

My point is the Vette will outlast the Viper by the average owner because it is a more refined and easily driven!

I've never heard a "car enthusiast" boasting about their gas milage before. That's a good one. Kinda sounds like the tortoise and the hare but we won't go there.

Man, with the Viper putting those numbers down and the Ford GT comming to "reduce the viper to garden snake status" at 590 hp, we are in serious trouble. I guess I'll have to get used to 3rd place now.

What, no Porsche Turbos. That's a bummer, I would have liked to see how a 996TT X50 option, or even a GT2 compares to these cars.

I thought Ford was only going to build something like 500 GT's a year? If that's the case, then I doubt we will get to see many of them on the road. Hopefully it's not the case because it looks like it is going to be one sexy beast. First Ford I would consider owning (if I could afford it that is )

I hope someone,no everyone, from the C6 development team is paying attention to this. They better get on the stick with alot of horsepower otherwise we will be coming in behind Nissan Maxima's! I hate having to compete on such a horsepower deficit when it should not be necessary. Maybe 405hp was enough in the late nineties but it seems every high end car starts at 450 with 500 being way too common. I want to buy a clearly superior car when the C6 comes out. And it better have a decent coffee cup holder too!

Less is not more, more is more.

Did they post track times? IF so...let us in on the information and for those wondering..where was the famous Porsche brand?

And I happen to agree...The mosler the way it sounds to have been set up is wacked for this comparision..JMHO

Thanks for the inside scoop.
