I'm more confused than ever. VP said he never had any trouble reading the oil level. TAMUz06 suggested the overnight oil read.

ZO6Y Lady,
You're not confused... I think both our posts said about the same thing. The differance is, I usually check mine in the morning because that's normally when I perform the routine maintenance on all my vehicles each month, while everything is still cool. But when I actually do this wasn't because I had any problems seeing the oil level, I just try to take care of the cars before they get hot, makes it easier to work around. Maybe that's where things got confusing.

When I took my car into TEAM Chevy in the Illinois area, their top service mechanic told me some of the '01 Z06's actually had the wrong dipstick tube installed on the car. He ordered me a replacement dipstick tube and I am going to have it installed when I take my car back in to get my oil burning issues resolved. I qualified for the complete ring replacement repair under GM warrenty as I went through 1.5L of Mobil 1 within ~500 miles after starting their Oil Consumption Test. Their tech also told me the cause of the oil consumption was because GM got screwed by their ring supplier and some inferior rings were installed on some cars. Cutting corners by the ring supplier sure seems to be costing GM bigtime down the road. The tech quoted me the ring replacement costs GM $2k per car.

Impossible to read on '02

There I was thinking that it was just me that couldn't read the oil level for my '02!!

It's definitely a major problem seeing the level when the car is warm as there are oil streaks down each side of the dipstick and the level itself seems to be really hard to see, possibly effected by the surface tension of the oil on the sides?

Anyhow, I'll try the cold engine approach and see if I can see the level this time...

Has anyone tried the roughing the dipstick approach? Did it help/work??

Thanks for the advice as always!

This method works well ... only way to do it IMO. And don't worry that the oil is cold and that hot oil will be alot higher on the dipstick. I've check it hot and cold, and the difference is hardly measureable.

"GM got screwed by their ring supplier and some inferior rings were installed on some cars. Cutting corners by the ring supplier sure seems to be costing GM bigtime down the road. The tech quoted me the ring replacement costs GM $2k per car."

That's what happens when someone isn't planning ahead at GM. These big companies today take too much risk IMO with some of their decisions. In the long run it costs them more money and pain then not. "Tough lessons learned today is the key to a more sucessful tomarrow" is my motto.
