Oil Extraction Units for Oil Change

Has anyone used one of the oil extraction units (hand pump or pneumatic) to do an oil change on a Z? You insert a suction tube down the dipstick holder and pump it out. Wondering if they leave any oil behind. May be an alternative to ramps/jacking etc.. Still have to get at the filter.

Personally, I like the idea of letting it drain .. seems like you'd get more of the old oil out of it ... and, as you said, there's still the filter to contend with.

I agree

If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right.

Plus, any garbage will have settled to the bottom, and draining the oil insures the garbage comes out that maybe the filter didn't grab.

My .02,

Do a search on this subject.

I tried to build a suction device to suck out the extra quart I add for track events. It didn't work and I made a mess. Cause: the dip tube on the LS6 tapers down to almost nothing at the bottom.

Besides, most dealers or shops will change the oil and filter using your stuff for about $25 and let you watch. I think it's hard to justify the trouble of doing it yourself.

I am going to try bringing my own oil to the dealer next time. I have had them change it a couple times and they have charged over $80. Not so much the $$ as the principle - charging over $8 per quart (x7) "just ain't right".

A local Chevy dealer only charges me $9 for an oil & filter change when I supply the Mobil 1 and filter!

Zippy Loves a good deal!

That makes me feel so much better - it must be because they refuse to rip off Sir Zippy! I doubt I can get close to that deal......

Since we're on the subject of oil changes Zipster, is Mobil 1 also what you recommend? If so whats the exact kind you get and price? Also where do you get your oil filter and what is its cost? I figure NAPA will have it all in stock. Thanks a bunch - I'm gonna get this done prolly when I take her in for GM to confirm "disc changer" is broken so they can order it under warrenty.

PS: I found a local dealer that actually returned my email with a call and was VERY nice and professional on the phone. Looks like I found one of the good dealers as the other 2 Chevy dealers I contacted have yet to even return my inquiries.

Dustin

Conventional draining is the only sure way to remove all oil.

Geez.........brings back memories of changing the oil in my Ski Centurion.

Just get yourself a set of RR's and in 15 minutes, you're done and it's done right!
