Over filling the LS-6 Engine Oil

I know the oil capacity of the engine is 6 quarts. If your racing you can put an extra quart of oil in for a total of 7 quarts. Has anynone experience adverse effects from leaving this extra oil in the engine. I know it puts a little extra pressure on the seals and so forth but I don't have any idea how big of a deal this is. Can anyone help me out?

When I get my oil changed - my dealership puts in 7.5 qts with the filter change. No problems with over 24K miles.

You'll get many different opinions on this! Good luck.

I'm sorry to tell you that you have your facts just a little wrong. When you drain the oil from a LEVEL position, the refill should be 6.5 quarts. If you jack up the rear a few inches, the refill will be 7 quarts. The addition of one more quart if the car is used for spirited driving, ie auto x, etc., is recommended by Chevrolet. They also recommend that the extra quart be removed before "normal" driving is resumed.

Some will attest to the fact that a little less oil is better than a little more. There is one current thread that deals with all of this. You can find it rather quickly if you do a search.

Your dealership? You mean like in Chevrolet dealership?

7.5 quarts, even with a filter change, is overfilling the crankcase. Are they actually putting in 7.5 quarts or just charging you for that amount? Personally, I'd be a bit skeptical if they told me they added 7.5 quarts.

6.5 Quarts is the right quantity with a new filter.

I use 7 quarts if I get the last drop out (by having the rear a few inches higher than the front and drained while warm) but never over the max point on the dip stick. When racing a total of 7.5 quarts (Auto-X and road racing that is) should, IMO, be the max.

Ideally when you check your dipstick it should register halfway between the upper and lower lines. If you are doing a track day go ahead and add 1 quart. However, if the oil is reading at the upper level on the dipstick, only add 1/2 quart. No, you do not need to lower the level after a track day. Most of it will burn off and what doesn't won't harm anything.

That IS NOT Chevrolet's recommendation!!

Isn't it a rather big leap of faith to say "most of it will burn off and what doesn't won't harm anything" when The General says to remove the excess after spirited racetrack driving

Thanks for the help but just because GM said to drain the oil right away doesn't necessarily mean the sky is going to fall on your zo6 if you don't. I put a lot more stock into what experience tells us from some of the other members with 7-7.5 quarts of oil and no problems to speak of. GM probably sets those limits to aid in the warranty issued work. About all I'll say is I know if puts more pressure on the seals in the engine but I don't know if that increase in pressure really hurts anything. Sounds like I'll be ok with the 7 quarts.

7.5 quarts of oil - $25.00

Oil change - $45.00

The extra quart (and then the remaining 6.5) burning off before the next oil change - PRICELESS!! (but true... LOL )

What are you referring to when you say, "GM said to drain the oil right away"? I've never seen anything like that. I believe GM says to use the "Oil Life Remaining" readout in the DIC to determine when it's time to change the oil. There is no "mileage" recommendation that I know of. I'm not quite sure why you believe 7 quarts is the optimum amount to keep in the crankcase but I'm pretty sure that probably won't hurt anything. Personally, in this particular situation, I don't believe more is better. When your engine feels the need for more oil, it'll tell you. In addition to Mr. Goodwrench, I put my trust in C4C5 Specialist when it comes to these sort of things. You can search this site and find numerous threads about this exact topic. The age old adage "To each his own" certainly applies here and no one will fault you for doing with your car what you believe is correct.

Running between 7 and 8 quarts does no harm to our engines. The oil pan is designed to handle it with no "splashing, etc." Do a search on this subject. Much has been written.

Paul--
You've outdone yourself this time. This is hilarious. Good way to start the day with a laugh.

You would think by some of these responses that we were putting oil in the space shuttle. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but the last time I looked it was still a pushrod V8 that uses a bent up peice of scrap metal to check the quantity.

Let's see if I understand the Generals infinite wisdom....you can use an extra quart safely to run around a racetrack at insane speeds, sliding sideways, engine at redline, with your hair on fire, but OMG better drain that oil for use on the street. Oh...I see the logic in it now.
