The owner's manual for the 2004 Z06 recommends shifting into reverse before turning your motor off. Why? I have noticed a slight shudder in engine when I don't put it in reverse , before turning the motor off.

Reverse has a higher (numerically) gear ratio than the forward gears which, in turn, would require more torque (applied to the rear wheels) to move the car with the clutch engaged.

The manual tells you this in case you are parked on an incline and you forget to set the parking brake. Reverse will require the most effort of all gear to move the car.
