My '02Z has a very annoying tendency to "forget" that I'm pressing and holding the Traction Control button in (yet another) attempt to get it into Competition mode. It seems that unless I'm sitting still or cruising at an exact constant speed, oh, and not turning the wheel, it won't allow me to engage Competition mode.
Anyone else continually peeved by this???
IMO, this is probably the biggest screw up on this whole car; in an effort to NOT fully disengage the electro-nannies and put the car into Comp mode I hold the button down, usually with no result. In the mean time, the car has no TC, no AH, nothing, and I have to push the button to reset and then push and hold AGAIN while trying not to upset the Queen Mum's tea.
Am I missing something here, or is this just plain stupid? Has anyone successfully programmed their way out of this mess? In a perfect world I'd purchase the car, set it to Comp mode, and never have to look at that stupid console button again!

Sounds to me like you've got an intermittent connection. Assuming you have no problem setting it if the car is stilling still, the most likely explanation is a bad switch, or a loose wiring harness.
Pop the switch plate out (open arm rest compartment and pry up from inside edge) and reseat the connector on the bottom of the switch. May not do anything, but easy enough to try to make it worth it...
Also, I don't remember if the back of the Switch is open, but if it is, you might be able to squirt some contact cleaner solution inside (and then, work the switch a bunch of times, before heading out to try and see if it made a difference to while moving).

Mine does it too intermittantly and it appears to be switch issues and nothing more - like when I'm not pushing it straight down but am pushing a little off to the side - like maybe it's getting worn out.
They really should have done it the other way around. One quick push to turn on comp mode, so even if it happens by accident, the nannies are still there to look after you, and 5 seconds if you really want to go it alone.

I sometimes see the same thing on my 04, so I don't think you are alone here. The switch over to comp mode works most of the time, but sometimes it doesn't register. Like you, I end up cycling back to AH/TC On, then try again and it always seems to work on the second attempt. Only time that it seems to fail is when I have some turns within that 5 sec. wait. Wonder if it has something to do with trying to re-enable the AH while in a turn.
I seem to recall that there was a device you could install to make Comp. Mode your default setting, not sure who sold it though sorry.
The device you are speaking of is a "Laptrax Trac-active" controller. I am pretty sure some of our supporting vendors sell them. HTH
