I want to put my Z away for the winter and drive my beater Saab, but I am afraid of using my brother's garage because of a little mice problem. I read on another forum that a mouse had climbed into a car and died. The owner could not get rid of the smell, and was forced to sell the car. Do I have to worry?
Ive been battling mice for years...hate the little rodents
Set mouse traps on both sides of each of the tires. Keep checking and you will catch most of 'em.
I did have a mouse die in my heater fan...it was sickening but I took out the fan...cleaned it out and washed everything around it with "simple green". That really did take care of any odor and as good as new.
Now, after all that advice...if you have a place to store your car that doesn't have mice...DO IT!
Set up an infrared video cam and see what those little varmits are doing at night........ then, put some cheese on traps and get 'em. Oh, be sure to keep your windows closed in the garage. That's how they get in during the day.
Try sticking mothballs under the hood to keep the mice away. Cover up the exhaust and put the car on jackstands. Then set mouse traps all around the base of the car.
I like the cat idea but they smell too. I would go with glue block's placed around the car. They step on the block's and they can't go anywhere. Check out the car everyday and remove the mice stuck to the blocks.
I would worry more about them chewing through things, than them dying or nesting.Easier to fight the infestation than protect the car alone.Heating and lighting the garage is most effective.Seal the entrances, set traps, and remove the clutter where they live now.Eliminate any wood or refuge piles inside and outside the structure and cut back brush.Eliminate any food sources, such as hay,dog/cat food, empty cup of coffee in the console or the 1/2 bag of cookies and moon pie in the cooler in the trunk, that's what they're after.A small terrier dog or a Ferrett would be much more effective than a cat, because they don't play with thier prey and you would only need them for a weekor two.If it is a larger structure you might want to also try introducing one of your native corn snakes into the building.Starting the car daily won't keep them out but it will keep them from wanting to nest and humans scare them the most. The more rat unfriendy it is the less rats you have.Good luck they are tricky little bastards.
