Valve Springs

I have heard that 02 and 03s have bad valve springs that are breaking and causing engine damage. Should I change out the springs in a low mileage (13,000) 02 Z06?

Re: Valve Springs

I have 30K miles on my 02' and have had no issues with valve springs.

The topic comes up frequently. Here's a recent one.

Very interesting, but I notice that this thread has been going for over 6 months and only 141 have reported spring breakage. Although, 87 have been 02s and 44 have been 03s. Unfortunately, only 56 gave build date or VIN info.
Going through the threads show that only two of the 141 had under 20,000 miles. Engine damage was reported by 20 of the 141, but most that reported damage did not give mileage.
There were almost 17,000 Z06s built in 02 & 03. Can data from 56 really conclude anything? It does look like 02s may have something going on though.
Maybe I'll change mine in the spring for piece of mind.

Re: Valve Springs

I would change them for peace of mind. I did. The '04 spring is a good choice along w/ patriots. It's cheap insurance.

Re: Valve Springs

I think most of us came to the same conclusion. The data doesn't support doing the work, but the failure can be so expensive that it is worth doing.

Yes, change them out... umm, like yesterday.
Don't procrastinate, unless you like to play Russian Roulette with your LS/6 motor.

Re: Valve Springs

I recently bought an 03 with 13k one owner miles. After several hours of reading concluded its not worth the nagging worry, let alone a failure. Ordered the parts and doing it as a priority before driving it. Question is, if you are willing to gamble a large repair bill and being deprived of the use of the car for a lengthy repair for a couple hundred bucks...

When I changed mine, I used this thread as a reference:

Re: Valve Springs

Can someone explain what the "rope trick" is that they talk about? I'm debating doing this myself or hiring someone to do it. I normally do all my own maintenance but not sure if this is above my head or not.

You can feed rope into the cylinder head through the spark plug hole and bring the piston up to hold the valves in place. I prefer using air.
