Virus!!!

If you get an email from me.....DO NOT OPEN IT!!!

Several members are getting emails from me with the Klez virus. DO NOT OPEN IT!! Members have been contacting me saying they are getting emails with the virus. Members that I haven't even sent an email to.

My machine is clean. I have the latest virus scan and have checked my machine daily, including using the Klez cleaning tool, the emails aren't coming from me!!

Just delete the damn things!!

Frank,

Might I propose that you keep this topic at the top of the list for at least a few days?

I'm sure glad my virus program is up to date or I wouldn't have caught it.

I looked at a few from different members, it's not really coming from the sender, the virus is spoofing the from address......

Everyone should download this tool:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...er/FixKlez.com

Run it, and if it finds the virus, go here and follow the directions:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com...oval.tool.html

And just a reminder. Z06Vette.com does NOT send email to our users for any purpose.

The only time you should get an email from this system is if you have email notification for threads turned on, and its impossible to get a virus via this feature.

If your virus program catchs them and deletes them can it still infect your system without you knowing it? I get 2 to 4 a day.

7 and counting so far this week

Maybe its just me, but it seems like common sense to not open small attached exe files from people i've never heard of before. If people didn't open them then none of us would be having this problem.

NotMuchLonger...

...that's part of the problem. The attached files come (supposedly) from people you DO KNOW.

I think most of us are smart enough to NOT open attachments from unknowns but don't be so quick to criticize. The last one that I got had one of our Moderator's return address. Before that one, I got another where the return path showed another Z06Vette member that I've exchanged emails with in the past.

I started getting them on Sunday, which prompted me to get off my butt and wire a scanner into my mail server. Cool thing is, it checks outgoing messages as well as incoming. So I can't send a virus

I also went nuts making sure everything was updated and clean.

One thing I have noticed is they're all coming from optonline.com and being bounced through cv.net.

If any of you use optonline, please check your system!

Yup, this Klez is a crafty virus, it takes your contact list and uses one of the addresses as the FROM address....IE, its possible for you to get a virus from someone else addressed to you and with a return address from YOU!.......

Don't pay attention to who its from, its not reliable......

Unfortunately, you do not have to open the attachment to activate the virus. Back in January, I got an email from a guy I sold my Oldsmobile 442 to a while back. I opened the email (NOT the attachment) and the virus activated on it's own using a vulnerability in my older version of Outlook Express.

There was a bug in in MS IE and Outlook (click here for the microsoft.com bulletin) that allowed html email attachments to execute as soon as the email was opened. This has been addressed/corrected in Outlook Express v. 6.0. Do yourself a favor and go to microsoft.com and get the latest version of IE and OE if you are using them now.

Fortunately, my Zone Alarm firewall stopped the unauthorized sending of the virus.

Another friend of mine told me to create a virus trap by creating an address in the your email address book entitled '*virus trap'. The asterisk ensures that it is first in your address book. Put an email address of '<illegaladdress'.

Supposedly, this will stop the virus from emailing everyone in your address book, because it will start at the top of your address book (at the *virustrap address) but cannot send the email to the illegal address, and therefore stops.

The Klez virus disabled the .exe file for my McAfee antivirus, which I foolishly had not had running in the background. Without the .exe file, I could not start it. I tried reinstalling it, three times, every time I resatrted my computer, I infected another .exe file.

Only McAfee's online Virus Scan saved me. Now it automatically checks for updates and prompts me to download them. Best $35 I ever spent!!
