Say what you want but when I'm stuck in the ATL traffic for 3 hours my clutch starts getting a little heavy. I'd love to have either a continuously
variable tranny or a 6 or 7 speed w/paddle shifter option.
Never though so before, but I must admit with the new paddle shifter "six" speed auto, it would be very tempting. Whenever stuck in traffic, only a glunton for punishment would not complain about all the extra work rowing the gears by hand.
For those of us that use these as daily drivers I can understand the complaints about being stuck in traffic and rowing through the gears... but lets be honest, we own these cars for the open road and especially for the Z06 for taking it where it belongs ... to the track. Obviously paddle shifters will work at the track but it won't ever be the same.
Actually, for "average" drivers, who are not skilled at competition driving on the track, paddle shitters would probably help their lap times. But for many these cars will NEVER see any track time, so why not have the convenience of an automatic. With a six speed the hit on gas mileage is minor. On the other hand if an "auto" Z06 increases weight resulting in less performance, at an increase in cost with reduced durability, most of us would still prefer the stick shift even to drive 100% on the street.
I'm with Zippy, give people the option. I bet they would sell a lot more than people would think. A 6 speed paddle shift Z with an aftermarket converter and some tuning would be killer at the strip. Make the gear ratios similar to the manual with maybe a lil bit taller 6th gear and as long as there wasn't too much of a weight penalty, I think it would do well, sales wise. DSG technology would be nice to have but would be a bit pricey.

MMmm, probably not. Regardless that an auto is quicker in the 1/4 (not faster, quicker e.t., auto's always mph a little less) it would be nice from time to time, per mentioned above for traffic. My car has been to NYC several times and let me tell you, the clutch does begin to become more than a little heavy when headed from the bronx to the city in bumper to bumper traffic.
Yes????? - who the hell voted YES? Get them banned from the forum!!!
If you want an auto go get a "stock" C5. Why GM even makes an auto C5 is beyond me anyway.
BMW have the correct idea - if it is an M car no Auto - just perhaps an SMG option. Then M-B go and ONLY offer an auto in their AMG offerings.. go figure.
Whew - what blasphemy - an auto Z06.
(although I think GM should have had the LS6 as the standard engine in the Anniversary Edition. I mean purple paint and pale seats do not a special edition make.. )
Sorry but the 08 bmw 5 serioes M class do come with automatic paddle shift like the c6 vettes

Ahhh but the real question is, does it use a torque converter as a clutch? If so it is nothing more than an automatic. The Z06 should be offered with the dual clutch tranny like BMW's SMG, Audi's/VW's DSG, and the new GTR. These are real manual gearboxes with computer activated clutches. No torque converters! I bet we see one in the next gen!
I have DSG in my Audi and VW and I would never want it in the Vette. Besides it's also heavier than the manual and does not fit the image of a ZO6. Obviously there are some great DSG units ....as in the F430 Scuderia. And for sure we'll soon see a better one in the Vette. But it seems something for someone who can't drive a manual well.....or spends their life in traffic.
When used in competition (e.g. autocross, drag racing but not road course), the automatic is more consistent and repeatable. That's why most official records for drag racing and autocross are held by automatic models. It would be nice to have one for daily driving. If setup correctly with the right gearing, an automatic will out perform a standard on the street.
