Times achieved at Nurburgring would be a great comparison to Europe's best sport cars.
i.e. The BMW E46 M3 is known to do low 8 minute laps with an experienced rider. The limited version of the E46 M3, CSL, is known to barely do a sub 8-minute lap...that only a few production cars can brag about. I would suspect the Z06 to be able to match the M3 CSL's times.
Would be great for a Domestic Sportscar to beat the European's at their own game....
the GT2 and GT3 are the fastest and second fastest production cars to officially run a fast lap. my memory is a little hazy but i believe the GT2 ran it around 7 minutes and 30 seconds. it beat teh GT3 by some 12-13 sseconds. the newest GT3 is supposed to cut off about 5-8 seconds its old time. but i dont know what other cars have run there. i'm sure the ENZO would beat the hell out of a GT2. i also would like to see what the '04 Z runs there.
How fast a car can do a lap at that track is IMO the best indication of a car's performance. Quarter mile times, top speed, lateral are artificial and one dimensional.
The true mark of a sportscar is how well all of these work together.

Yes, to determine wether it's worth spending cash to upgrade our existing Z's ......
If GM doesn't publish before and after times, I'd suspect the difference may be marginal. They may not publish b/c they may fear the minor time difference would disuade people to spend the extra money for the upgraded suspension.

Exactly my point of this thread..
Nurburing laptime is like the benchmark setting for european
makers... now Japanese are getting into the scene as well....

The current record for production cars is held by the new Porsche Carrera GT, somewhere in the 7:30's.
The best lap time for the GT3 is 8:03, for the 911 Turbo 7:56, and for the GT2 7:46.
The new GT3 is supposed to be about 8-10 seconds faster than the previous GT3, so it's probably in the low 7:50's to high 7:40's.
I am glad that GM finally gives a damn what the Corvette's times are at Nurburgring. Its a great time to be alive and a damn fine time to drive a Z06. Breaking the 8 minute mark puts the Z06 into some pretty elite company.
In another thread of the same topic, some forum members made comments about how much "extra" was done to the test car(s) to achieve this milestone. While I appreciate their comments, I would add that no more was done to the Z06 than to the other cars that share the sub 8 minute lap time. In other words, if our competition is doing it - we have to do it too.
I know we say it all the time - but really - the Z06 is by far the finest Corvette ever. I think the 2004 takes another step in the right direction.
