no membership fee required.

as you guys know ... we have a new owner.. he is very savy in running message boards.. and owns several..
you should have noticed all the changes by now... updates... wider screen.. bigger pix..
and still free..!

he's gotta make a buck.. this is what he does for a living.. not a hobby.
i personally don't like it.. but i will tolerate because they are working sooo hard and this place still requires no memebership !

Actually JC had started doing that with Banner Ads quite a while ago, so its been going on for some time.

Re: Ads In Our Threads Now?

this ad business must work ... once I got past the annoyance factor I found it interesting to see what came up against a particular thread topic ... then scroll past it and move on ...
Another thing I noticed was the "similar threads" box at the bottom ... don't recall having this before

I have a natural immunity to internet ads.

I'd rather pay the membership fee.
Outside of the threads would be a lot better. Like the top of the page or bottom not mixed in. My .02 cents

Re: Ads In Our Threads Now?

I wonder if it's feasible to offer two options to users. (1) A completely free membership with ads, just as it is now. And (2), the user pays a membership fee to have the ads hidden from their browser.

Ads don't bother me as long as they don't become obtrusive or detract from the usefulness of the site. Of course, it's kind of cool when a real flashy advertisement gives me an epileptic seizure. That's always fun.

BTW, is wvphoto promoting a certain pharmaceutical product from his avatar now?

Interesting concept

I have long marveled that this board did so much and had so much for free with relatively few ads. And like many here now am not wild about the changes However change is inevitable, and time marches on and like compost ...progress happens

Re: Ads In Our Threads Now?

It takes a little adjustment....
Right in the middle of the thread is somewhat annoying but.....
Anyway, I tried the "Remove Advertisments" tab and it just runs you to a "you are already registered as _____________. If you have forgotten your password....blah blah"
Oh well.......improvise, adapt and overcome. Get used to them.
No big deals.

Re: Ads In Our Threads Now?

C'mon guys, we all know how to ignore things of no interest...static on our favorite oldies station, TV/radio commercials, wife (but only occassionally)...and to quote a great philosopher, "There's no free lunch."

At least these are unobtrusive and non-invasive...and as someone posted, some of them may be of interest...but if we ever get pop-ups I'll change my tune. I CAN'T ignore those.
