Adjusting the emergency brake

I just read an article on another forum about adjusting the emergency brake. There was some debate on whether or not to hold the button down while pulling the lever. I can't see how the ratchet button (held down or not) would have any impact on the brakes self adjusting while backing up and pulling the lever.
What do you guys think?
