Another successful Homelink Installation

Hooray ,

I finally got around to putting in a Homelink (visor garage door remote system) in my Z today. I've been wanting to do this for months. I have 2 garage doors (rolling code type) and an electronic gate in my driveway. My sun visors looked like a Radio Shack display and were a pain to move whenever I needed to use them when the sun was in my eyes.

Well I did it with a little help from the following link homelink installed

I made a few changes to the process that I think will help others. I'll post pics and instructions tomorrow. (too tired to mess with Photoshop tonight)

Overall the entire install cost me only $26.

1) Sun visor with Homelink donated from a totaled MOPAR at the wrecking yard in Grand Prairie. Cost $16.21

2) Can of vinyl spray paint (black) to change the beige Homelink button cover to black (wouldn't need this if I could have found a better donor car. I found 5 and they were all the same beige interior) Cost $4

3) Box of T splice connectors $2. (my minor change to the install to avoid soldering

4) Heavy duty needles for my wife's sewing machine $2

5) Upholstery thread (black) $2

Total cost $26.21
Not having my sun visors full of remotes... Priceless.

Thanks to those who built the original thread. It gave me the courage to cut open the visor and go for it.

On another note.... Also removed the Airbag Warning labels at the same time. Was a little freaked out when I started but they came off no problem.

If you're interested check back tomorrow for the pics.

O.K. Here's the pics..

First you need to start with a donor visor from one of the 175+ auto models that have them today. See Homelink website for list...

Here's my donor torn apart.

Next remove the Homelink unit... Here's a pic of the guts...

Next if the button cover is the wrong color spray with black vinyl paint..

Now it's time to get serious. You have to remove your visor, see links included in previous message for details on removal. It's a 30 second process with a flat screwdriver and a quick twist.

Once you have it out you have to rip the seam to get into the visor. See tool in pic.

Now here's my twist. Get some T splice connectors and splice into the red and white wires. This save the step of soldering the wires together and gives you a nice tight connection.

Also see that I've outlined the Homelink unit. Use a utility knife to cut around the outline.

Once done connect the orange Homlink wire to the white wire and the black to the red. Didn't make sense to me but it's the way it works.

Insert the unit and carefully cut through for the button cover. Snap the cover into place and get ready to sew together.

Finally, be real nice to someone who sews, my wife in this case. Have them get a heavy duty needle for their sewing machine, like the kind used for denim, and some upholstery thread. If they're careful they can sew the visor back together.

At last your done and look at the garbage you can get out of your car. I got rid of three remotes and the darn stickers for the airbags.

Anyone who wants to do this won't be disappointed with the results. The only really hard part is the sewing back together.

Good luck.

No problem. My pleasure. I couldn't have done it without the help from the original links.

This is such an easy mod and should have been in the car from the beginning that anyone with my remote problem should try it.
