04 Z06 18 K - Problem: Scraping noise in drivetrain (or somewhere)
Conditions: Max or near max .. hard left ot right turns @ 5-10mph
Only happens if in Gear(1st) NOT in coast mode
and YES you can feel the scrape-grind-vibration in the shifter
Tires & Shifter are stock - never tracked - or abused -Just a few ocassional bursts to triple digits
**Where to head first **
? Transmissiom ? Differential ? Wheel Bearing ? Why ?
In Addition:TEST DRIVE TODAY: added to post #14
COLD Results:Garage Temp = 60 Deg
I definately got nothing 1st or 2nd gear
HOT RESULTS:After 10 miles
Ist & 2nd - Definate YES
Additionally Noted:
Duration of noise = 1-2 Seconds
We are talking level surface here .. wheel set to full or near full left or right
Seems to happen ONLY in Deceleratiuon mode,no matter how slight
Cannot make it happen accelerating
**********Conclusion : for now anyway********************
Changed Differential Fluid & TWO Cans of Additive - All is Quiet
Does anyone know what these things act like whith only one can of addative or none ? The leaky diff seal was replaced a year ago and probably the fluid was too, makes one curious about what went back in ... For this problem to just vanish with a fluid change is kinda amazing.
************* Thanks again for all the help ****************

Do a search "Creak from rear"
It maybe rust buildup between the hub and the axle shaft splines. It creates a noise as the torque changes. See kwjZ06 respone # 8 on the thread. Is this it?

Thanks So much ... a good starting place .. This thread is a good read Creak from rear

Since the splines on the halfshafts slide into the hubs, which together are turning when coasting, the noise should still be present but he said it isn't.
The differential still acts as a differential even when coasting, so if it's making noise it should do so when not in gear.
What is the clutch pedal position (in or out) when the noise is present?

Clutch is fully engauged ... Pulling the car in 1st gear when the noise is present...Cannot get the noise to happen in the freewheel or coast mode
I'm thinking driveshaft coupler. It's inside the torque tube on the forward end of the driveshaft. However, does it only do it in first gear or is that the only time you notice it?
It's often difficult to determine where a noise is coming from, let alone what's causing it, without hearing it firsthand. And even then it can be hard, as you're aware.

Yeah...it sure is ! Thanks for your question: "However, does it only do it in first gear or is that the only time you notice it? "
Ans : I have only tried it in first gear and that is the gear I found the problem. FYI ..I was wondering about trying second gear when I did the post. It's Sunny and 56 deg...Perhaps also get the answer to another question I have. Does it do it the same HOT or Cold. All my notations are in the HOT mode, that being after 20 mile 65mph drive followed by a 10 min 35-40 mph drive. I will post 2nd gear and hot/cold results.
If Jub is subscribing, naturally there's beer involved ...
I'm waiting for more information ...

I'm just curious how much of the scraping is felt at the shifter?
I think No Doubt has the right idea about being in the torque tube somewhere.
Ok John ..How Much ?
Slight but definately decernable as a scrapeing vibration that coincides with the sound . A subjective call I know .. definately not severe.
