C5 engine removal from top!!!!

Can i just separate the torque tube from the housing by taking out the 5 13mm bolts, then jack up the torque tube as far as it will go, then attach hoist to engine, then jack up motor off mounts, then slide motor forward off the driveline input shaft and lift out.

Or will that not work??....I don't want to drop subframe/cradle/or remove rack

Or what is the easiest way to take LS1 out of the top with removing as little large components as possible.....ie can I skip the removal of the steering rack, cradel/subframe/ or a-arm joints if anything at all.

This is being done on a drive way

It can be done, but it's much easier to lower the sub-frame a little bit.

Re: C5 engine removal from top!!!!

You are going to have a very hard time getting it out the top without removing the steering rack. And of course you are going to have to remove the radiator/fans and it might be a good idea to remove most of the front accessories too. The motor has to come forward quite a ways to clear the torque tube input shaft. Taking it out the bottom is definitely the best way to do it, but I realize if you're doing it outside in your driveway that is pretty near impossible unless you can get the car at least 3 feet off the ground.
Good luck and be careful!

Took mine out the top. If I had to do it all over again, it would come out the bottom.

If you're doing it in the drive way, all I have to say is good luck. Watch the firewall!

It probably would be a good idea to take off the front clip if you are using a roll around cherry picker to remove the engine. Someone I know had a shop remove it from the top and they banged up the front bumper cover real bad trying to get the hoist close enough to get the engine out. :eek2:
