Cam spec faq??

May someone please lead me to a website, book or anything that would explain the 3 specs of a cam? I'm trying to learn everything I can before choosing a cam for my 03 Z. I'm having trouble deciphering the cam threads on this board from my aimless searches. Oh, I guess I should mention that I'm getting long tube headers, high flow cats, 3.73 gears, cam, tubbed with 345's, custom ported heads, non-adjustable penskes, and blackwing intake followed by a good tune. This is a street car that may see the track once in a while, but my goal is to get it to pull harder in 3rd and 4th. In other words, I like spirited driving between 60mph and 130mph on curving country backroads. I don't mind a lumpy idle, but I do not want to have city driving comfort diminished too much. Am I right to assume that the 3.73's will help the loss of low end torque by going more aggressive than stock with an aftermarket cam? Any advice on cam specs based on my goals??? Thanks!!!

I have no problems with it. In fact I could stand a little more
"uncomfortable" but that is just me. I good with Edit and and got the cam surge completely out of it.
I got it from LG motorsports. Call Lou@ LG Motorsports. It is called the G5X1 cam kit. It is a compcam but if you buy it thru Lou he will help out with the tuning. You can get it in a 114 seperation and I think it has an almost smooth idle. I went with 112 because I HAD A SMOOTH IDLE STOCK.

Thanks. That's the kind of info I was looking for. BTW, what is cam surge. Is it when the engine hits the peak torque RPM? If so, does the tuning smooth out the torque curve??

No cam surge is the surging that takes place when the engine wants to buck around at low speeds. 1000-2000 rpms.
If you were in 5 or 6 gear on the highway running between those rpms the car would surge and it sucks. But it can be tuned right out. I use this simple test to see if I got the surge tune out. I lug the engine down to 1300 rpm in 6 gear and then floor it. The engine shouldn't miss fire or buck. Normaly you wouldn't be in that situation, you would down shift but that is a good way to know if you or your tuner got it right. ( just MY method, might be better ways)

Oh I see. Thanks for clarifying. It's good to know that a good tune can alleviate this.
