I'm trying to decide which camera mount I want to go with on a harness bar. I have a B-K bar, so I was thinking about getting the B-K camera mount. I have heard good things about the I/O Port Racing mount though and it's cheaper.
Has anyone been able to compare the two mounts? If so, which one do you like better and why?
I have the IO Port mount on a BK (Burger King? ) bar and it works very very well. It's highly adjustable, puts the camera at just the right height, and it has a poly-urethene "shock" bushing meaning little to no vibration. I have shot a number of DE's from inside the car, and the video turns out terrific (using a DV Canon camera, a ZR25/MC) - turn on the anti-jitter and wind filter, and even the audio is nice and crisp.
I'm sure the BK piece is nice, but the savings and extra adjustability on the IOP part just seems better. FYI, I ran some black tape around the bar in the two places the mount clamps down which 1) gives it a better grip, and 2) prevents the bar from being scratched up. I leave mine in the car 24/7, since it's pretty much out of the way. Oh yeah, hint #2, the long screws that stick down from the mounting bracket are kinda sharp, and can get you if you're reaching under the mount to the rear. I bought some 1/4" (might have been like 3/16") vacuum line plugs for 0.99 and cover them up - works great, save some nicks (I used the extra one in the pack to cover the screw from removing the antennae).
I have some recent Roebling video, I'll digitize some and post it soon.
Well.. I hate writing out Brey Krause all the time and everyone seems to know what a B-K bar is anyway.
What size mount did you get for your bar? I/O port says that they have a 1" for the harness bars. Places like speedwaremotorsports seem to only have the larger mounts.
I like the looks of the I/O port mount better too. It's red and black and the harness bar is black and I'm getting red belts. The B-K mount is brushed aluminum when all they sell is black harness bars. Being that it's $40 less is just icing on the cake.
If I don't hear from you about the mount size, I'm sure that I can measure my bar or call I/O port and find out the appropriate size for the B-K bar.
That would be great to see your onboard video once you dititize it. Make sure that I get a link to it if you would.
A Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it "le Big-Mac".
Le Big-Mac, what do they call a Whopper?
I dunno, I didn't go into Burger King.
Sorry, still fixated on Burger King
I believe (with 99% certainty) that I have the larger mount (the 1 1/4 - 2" model) - I looked around for my original invoice but it's been "filed" somewhere. I originally ordered it to use in my Supra that had a 1 1/2" 4 point roll bar and then kept it for use in the Vette. The sizing seems to work perfect with the BK bar, and gives it some sizing flexibility.
I was in Northstar Motorsports today buying my Brey Krause (so you don't get Burger King on the mind) harness bar, sub belt hardware, Schroth belts and as luck would have it, they also sell the I/O Port mount in addition to the Brey Krause camera mount. They both looked nice, but I went with the I/O Port mount. It offers more flexibility, it's cheaper and most importantly, it's black with a tiny bit of red on it, not brushed aluminum like the B-K mount. My minidv camera is very small (under a pound), so I shouldn't have any problems with weight or size anyway.
BTW.. Northstar only carried the larger mount, so we checked the size of the Brey Krause mount and it's the same as the larger I/O Port mount. The bar must be thicker than a normal harness bar.
Does anyone happen to have a photo of their bars and camera mounts that I can take a peek? It's no big deal. I just would like to see where people were mounting it.
That's just black electrical tape, wrapped around like 4-5 times - just attached the bracket loosely, determined where it touched (top and lower parts of bracket are offset) and ran some tape around the bar!
I leave my antenna off all the time - I bought a little stubby from Napa which works pretty decent, but I found most of the stations I listen to come in pretty good with no antenna. I keep the OEM in the trunk, so for long road trips I can just stick that on for better reception out of the local area. Plus I listen to far more CD's than FM - one my future upgrades is a nice CD/DVD/MP3 HU so i can burn 50 CD's to a single DVD
Does anyone have any photos of their B-K camera mount mounted to their B-K bar? I want to see what this looks like.
I'm having second thoughts on the I/O Port mount now after realizing how you have to mount it to the bar. Especially after seeing how nicely the B-K mount mounts to the bar. The circular portion on the B-K mount is the perfect size for the B-K harness bar and it's made out of urethane, so that's what touches the bar instead of bare metal. Tape is an option, but I'm not sure it would look all that great. I don't know.
Bob,
I have the larger I/O Port mount on my 1.75" rollbar. Used it all season without issue. Works great. I do have metal to metal contact from the mount clamp to the rollcage, but I'm not too worried about appearance for my car anymore.
I didn't have to use tape, or anything else. Just clamped the mount to the roll cage and it hasn't moved all season.

Brad,
I was going to ask you about that, but then figured that you're probably not too worried about using it on a roll bar for a car that's used for racing. I'd say that you're doing good as long as you keep the fenders on it and the rubber side down.
Thanks for all the replies. I'd still like to see a photo of the B-K camera mount mounted on the B-K bar if anyone has one.
Bob,
Although you probably already have a camera, I'll through this out for others that are reading this thread.
The camera makes a difference in video quality (obviously). Someone on this forum suggested that when I bought my camera, I make sure it has image stabilization. Most do these days, but some of the cheaper ones do not. I also got one that shots in widescreen format to maximize the viewing area when I watch my videos on my bigscreen tv.
With image stabilzation on, and using the I/O port mount directly bolted to the rollcage, my picture is rock steady (unless I'm hitting those little red and white things that seem to be littered all over the place on a racetrack...).
