Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

For my next mod ive been shopping around for a new camshaft....but im worried it'll ruin my 28mpg on the highway.

Would a milder cam be easier on gas consumption or will it not affect it at all?

And ive heard alot of hype about the G5X3 cam....what do you guys think?

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

Send Busto an PM. He just installed one a couple of weeks ago. Don't know about the mileage factor but it sure sounds good and 3 gear pulls are something to behold.

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

A cam, or an good Heads and cam package really won't affect your highway mileage much IF it is properly tuned after the install, and IF you don't hammer it all the time! You will notice a significant drop in your stop and go traffic mileage. I still get 27 to 29 mpg on trips on the interstate to Denver and COS, and that's driving the speed limit plus 7 to 10 mph. (82-85 mph).
My car is far from stock, medium/large cam, big valve high compression heads, (11.5 to one), 3.73 gears, all the appropiate bolt ons, and a Fast 90/90 set-up. FRC Tom has tuned my car on the street and on the dyno, and I feel that is the key to "economical performance". ( I know that is a contradiction in terms, but it is very true in the case of a modded Z06).
Proper tuning is the KEY! HTH

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

I'm getting 28 mpg on the highway with the thunder racing baby cam. Around town is where I get hit and run about 12 to 14mpg but I think its my own dam fault.

If you go for a cam don't go for the 224/224 .563 114lsa. Its good for an extra 30hp over the stock cam but in hindsight its a bit small. If I had a 2002 or new Z06 I probably wouldn't have bothered because that stock reliability and 100K mile maintaince free scenerio rocks..and the 2002 and newer cam was a really good design..IMO

Hope this helps..

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

First Off, Welcome to the Forum!!

Now,
If you are worried about gas mileage, go buy a Prius!!

A well tuned 450-500 rwhp LS-6 will get you 28-30 mpg cruising at 2-2.2K rpm in 6th which is 80-85 with stock gears!

It's all in your right foot and driving experience!
I never use cruise control if I want mileage.
Especially out here in the mountains!!
Algorithms are too aggressive!!
Never use cruise in the rain

Find the 'Search' function here and you won't mention 'hype' and G5-X3 in the same sentence!!

It will, but not by much. Depends on the driver. Good luck.

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

Short and sweet -> highway is still good - city ok. (considering the hp)

MTI G1 cam - 27 hwy and 17 city.

Again, I am not a slow poke in city traffic but I do coast whenever possible.. its all these damn red lights!!

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

It will suffer in town. They hwy milage is amazing in these cars with a cam. When you consider the power its making the small trade-off in fuel economy is worth it.

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

I hardly owned the car long enough to tell you what the mpg was before I modded it, but I have the G5X3 cam now and can tell you what I'm getting. Around town I get 17.5-18+mpg with quit a bit of stop-n-go. I haven't been on a trip yet to see the highway mpg, but the instantaneous meter avg's between 26-35mpg with cruise on at 70-80mph, depending on light hills...I live in Dallas so very light hills. Incidentally I also have a Vararam intake, LG pro headers w/ high flow cats, UD pulley, MSD wires/plugs, and a dyno tune. 428rwhp and 394TQ. Hope that helps.

Oh, and gas isn't near as bad as the rubber burnt when I step on the gas.

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

i wonder.....does the instantaneous meter compensate for the new cam and other mods or is it only based on factory settings?

What factory settings??

Gas mileage is computed with fuel flow and speed no matter what type vehicle you are driving.................

Re: Can a Cam affect gas mileage???

The fuel mileage reading works off injector duty cycle and it is based on the factory setting for the injectors. You offset those settings when tuning or install larger injectors and then those readings are bogus.
