Cavalier engine problems

97 Cavalier 4 banger. Engine losses power and backfires with A\C on. She says it does without air on too, but I can not get the problem to happen with it off. Also seems to get HOT when at a light. Fan is fine, coolant fine, no visible leaks of anything. It has around 58,000 miles on it.

Any suggestions?

Might be way out there, but it could be your EGR System is plugged up. How has the gas mileage been? Do you smell a heavy gas odor when idling? What does the exhaust tips look like - black soot? Could be a number of things, but I don't think it has anything to do with the air being on or off except for the extra load on the engine.
