CCWs 18x11, 18x12 got em, Pics Up

What a wheel/tire day for me!!!! From one extreme to another...

It started out dealing with a seller of new F1 Eagles on Ebay that was quite humorous! She clearly did not have the tires, or wanted no part of a transaction that involved face to face cash, despite my assurances of police presence or doing the swap in a crowded shopping mall. She had no time for that, studying for exams ;-)????? SCAM... I alerted the winner to beware...

That past me, I called CCW and talked with John.... VERY INFORMATIVE on wheels/tires for a Z06, is an understatement!!!! I hopped in the truck and drove to Daytona. I caught John cutting a new 19" wheel... VERY NICE. His offerings look to be expanding....!!!

I did the "17 vs. 18 inch" discussion with John, we reviewed the tire options, the plan, and I settled on 18x11 and 18x12s wheels. Choices in stock for tires.... Either GY slicks (315/335), or Pilot Sports (275/335), or Hoosiers. He also showed me the double secret, not for sale: GY slick tire with 4 deg of neg camber built into the tire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John was very patient with me, did not press, and reviewed things so I could I could make the best decision for me.

I ALMOST walked out with 2 sets of 315/335 GY Slicks (actually1.5 he was missing 2 rears) !!!

ALL STOP--- I got spooked. The wife will flip if I pull into the driveway with the pickup loaded with multiple stacked sets of slicks and new wheels that will not be mounted for another month.

I decided that at this time, this was just a tad too aggressive for me, but I wanted the wheels to EVENTUALLY do that. So STEP 1-- I took the wheels with the Pilots to run daily so that I can get used to the look and feel, and ensure (deal with) fitment issues while I run my Eagles a few more times at Roebling.... John ensures me they will work no problems. I do need to pull the rear brake ducts, no big deal. THIS WINS WIFE POINTS. She loves the CCWs as the daily ride, hates the stocks.

The Eagles drift a little too much for me on the track and while that is fun, I think I am ready for a little more "stick".

STEP 2.

When the Eagles die, I will strip the Eagles off the stock rims and mount an intermediate tire... ~KUMHOS V700s on stocks, and run those on the track a few times. Brad-- that is probably what I will run at Road Atlanta when we hook up.

STEP 3.

When the Kumhos DIE, the stock wheels go back to new EAGLES and become daily drivers again. ;-) By this point I can pull the red herring on the wife... PULL the Pilots and run GY slicks there after. The CCWs become the track wheels.

STEP 4 (a few years down the road)... I want those neg camber tires. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!
This strategy solves all my problems in a paced, but timely fashion as I get more track time.

THANKS to Subdriver, DJ, Mark and everyone who helped me generate the PLAN!!!!

Wouldn't taking the brake ducts out be couterproductive for a track car? Or are the rear brake ducts not as needed as better front ducts?

This looks as a very attractive option for me also. Sounds like we are going in the same direction.

Thanks

DMP

BTW, pricing? can you address the numbers for the wheels?

Joe, sounds like you've got it all figured out. I will be getting a set of CCWs this spring too. Dave, rear brake cooling ducts don't do a whole lot. DRM uses the ducts to mount tranny and diff coolers.

Will you still have full turning capability with 11's up front and are the 12's going to fit without tubing in the rear?

Everyone....

Thanks!!!

OK... It's Christmas eve and my wife is giving me grief...
I tried for the camera in a red herring move... and she blew a gasket when she saw me headed for the garage vice the tree...

;-)

The wheels are not mounted yet. Tomorrow? ;-)

The rear brake ducts do Nothing practical for rear brakes.
Your outer ducts stay put, only the ducting is removed... 1 screw.
2 options.. pull them, or use a heat gun and "mold them" a little so they clear. John said his last "mold attempt" looked like crap, but it worked. Joecoool opted for pulling them with the same setup as mine. I will start pulling after Santa stuff in the AM.

John quoted 1650 for 17 wheels, 1800 for 18s. Included tax.

WIFE is NOW HITTING ME... More later.

PICS....

Wheels mounted. Full turning. No rubbing. I put the car into a skid pad condition (turning at limits) and also had no problems. I took the precaution during installation of raising the rear end about 1/2 inch. (I was max lowered using stock bolts.) I will run another week or so and then lower it back down in 2 x 1/4 inch adjustments. ;-) John said it would handle max lowering (stock) with no problem, and based on my initial testing, I have no reason to believe it will not.

WARNING. My car has about -2 degrees of negative camber. Do not try this with more than that or you will rub the top inside against the fender well ! For stock rear camber, these wheels should hold 335s no problem.

My pics in the gallery...

Calculations....on 12" width rears with 335s.

Sorry my terrible camera does not do these wheels justice.

2.379 degrees of negative camber (or more) on the rear tire will rub the inside wheel well "liner" with MPS 335/35/18s on the CCW.

My numbers were off before. I have neg 1.6 dialed in right now, and I can still squeeze a finger between the tire and the liner.
Suspension height may also change the numbers...I figure my rear is about 1/2 down from stock at the moment. My fronts are all the way down on the stock bolts (all bushings in).

Those new prototype negative camber Goodyear slicks are NOT going to work with this set up. I will need to put the suspension camber back to ZERO, and then put a spacer to pull the tire out some. That is guess and a long way off from happening anyway ;-). Of course it is GOOD thing to go back to zero for someone like me who uses the car daily!!!!!

I do not remember what GM's assembly line variance is for rear wheel camber, anyone? I think it is like +1 to -1 degree????
So for someone that is stock... It is a nobrainer workable soln to get the 335s under the rear on these wheels. Heck I don't think mine hang out any more than my F1s. The gain is all on the inside. IT FITS!

JOEZ06,

Thanks for the great post. I was talking to John yesterday and I'm sold on the same set-up as what you got. FLIS uses CCW's exclusively on both their race cars and they are a real nice wheel. Oh, and John said that his off-set is identical to the stock wheels, so the additional width is born equally on the inside and outside edges. Therefore it will stick out slightly further than the stock wheel/tire combo on the outside edge. Just a little FYI.

Waterfreak...

Thanks... I have been paranoid the last few days, checking my wheel well liners, driving harder and harder, lowering, praying, checking, lowering, praying.... And so far, NO rubbing at all.

I am even thinking about some modifications to put those brake ducts back in. John said he tried it with a heat gun, and it turned into "goo". I am going to research it, and perhaps come up with a more controlled way...

I think if I fabricate a thin "mold" out of wood that I can insert into the duct, then put the sucker into an oven, raising the temp slowly I can work the plastic to conform to my new thinner shape that will clear the outside of a 335. What the heck? A cheap part if I mess it up.

If those 335s stick out a little more... so be it. It does not bother me at ALL!!!!

Won't bother me either. I'm just hoping my wife was listening while I was talking with John. My birthday is Wednesday.

I'll probably try to shape the duct. If I mess it up. I'll remove it and purchase another set to have in case I ever go back to stock.
