Changing Tranny Fluid

This is not another "how-to", you fellas have definitely got me covered on that, this is a mere thank you for all that have posted pics and text for changing the trans fluid. Special thanks to pmontelo for the awesome pictorial of the trans fluid change.

I have 9900 miles on my 01 and from the posts RE: trans fluid changes I should be ok since I am well beyond the 5000 miles marker as mentioned by c4c5. Any inputs on this.

Thanks again bruthas, this
is for you!
Jim

I changed mine the first time at 11,500 to amsoil. I did not notice much of a difference at the time. Amsoil or mobil 1 ATF should be fine. It was changed by the dealer when they had to replace syncros at 21k and at 22.5k. So I will change it again at around 27k or so.

I used 2 sets of Rhino ramps at the time to make sure that I got a level fill. I got about 3.25 qts out and back in. They say the tranny holds 4 qts, but most that have done it say 3.25 or so is about all she will take.

When you drain it try and hold your drain pan up to the tranny, If not it will go all over the place. I have done this procedure to 3 other cars and its just the way the fluid comes out. Right into the drain back and back out all over the floor.

Have fun!

Edit

I see that most of what I told you is in pmontelo how to:

Finally changed my transmission fluid (warning lots of pics)

gmblack3, thanks man, I forgot to specifically include you in the hearty thank you as well. Your tip on holding the oil drain pan close to the drain plug saved me a huge mess! Thanks .
One more question to anybody on line, when checking to make sure the car is level where to you check level at? I put a level on the door sill and adjusted the hyd jack under the rear axle. Juts curious what you fellas do.
I bought the wrong pump to refill so now I sit waiting for the spousal unit to get home so I can go get the right pump to refill.
Again, thanks to all for your collective wealth of knowledge, its been a great help!

Brother, please make sure you are using somekind of jackstands. Don't want to see anybody get hurt.

IMO I would take the measurement right at the jacking points where the pucks would go.

I'm out doing yard work today, I would much rather be doing something to the Z06.

Oh yea, I am definitely using jackstands, I just relift the rear of the car remove jackstands and lower it to the ground, then when ready for the refill, I jack of the rear axle again, install jackstands and go from there.
Thanks for your concern!
I understand the yard work. I put off cleaning the pool far to long and ended up cleaning it yesterday, it looked like a damn science experiment with all the alge!

Let us know if you notice any difference or not with the shifting.

Well I finished filling the tranny, took about 3.5 to 3.75 quarts, ain't sure how much I spilled on the floor!
Then I took it for a drive. Seems like it takes the tranny less time to "warm-up". Meaning, normally in the morning going to work it takes a little bit for the trans fluid to warm up and the shifts to smooth out, The synthetic fluids seem to facilitate smoother shifting sooner than the normal fluid. As far as a shift comparison overall, I'm not sure if its smoother or not. I think so but that might be my expectations overriding reality. I'll give it a couple of days.

I did my car last Jan @ 10k with Redline D4 and helped my friend yesterday. 3-2/3 qts is all you can refill with a good front to back sloped drain technique. Yes you have to get the pan up high because the fluid just wants to gush out.

Well, after a day of driving with the synthetic, I think the shifting is MUCH smoother than with the old stuff.

I changed mine at 10K miles, it was NASTY - shifted like a dream for about a 100 miles - then stuck in 4th. If I had it to do over I would change the fluid every 6K miles (if you track the car that is).

Les, I sure hope mine don't get stuck in 4th. Sorry about the bad luck you had. I don't track mine and won't until I get a driving school under my belt.

The shift fork seems to be a weak link in the tranny (aluminum and should probably be steel) - I am convinced it is the clutch hanging up at high RPM shifts that is causing the syncro problem. I am VERY happy with the service I got from the dealer rebuilding the tranny, so no for me, except I want to get to the cause of the problem soon.

Les

PS: Good idea about the driving school BTW - Enjoy!
