Clutch fluid change questions.

I was giving the Z06 it’s first under hood inspection of the year when I saw a “new” place to put fluids it. It turns out to be the clutch fluid reservoir, and it looks like the fluid could stand a change. I understand that bleeding the clutch is a PITA if you don’t have the bleeder installed.

Is it reasonable to suck out what is in the reservoir with a Turkey Baster and repeat this procedure routinely? Will any DOT3 fluid get the job done or is something else recommended?

Thanks again in advance.

That's exactly what I did to mine. After each fill, pump the clutch pedal several times to get the fluid to circulate. It took several "baster dips" to get the fluid clean, but it was well worth it. High quality DOT 3 brake fluid is fine.

If you're not tracking the car, DOT 3 is best.
DOT 4 has a higher wet/dry boiling point, but is more hydroscopic.
Don't add DOT 4 to a current DOT 3 fill. Have to drain and purge first.

I use the turkey baster trick every oil change. 28K miles now and no issues with the clutch. When this clutch goes I'll put in a bleeder.

My car does see the track - road course only. I guess I will have to break out the shop manual tonight and see what's involved with a drain/fill.

Bleeding is a major PITA as the bleed port is on top of the housing. To get to it requires removing the exhaust center section and the heat shield which has about half a million bolts holding it in... or maybe 36 but it seems like half a million...

Short of that, I think the turkey baster method is your best bet.

My Bad ... confusing Brake fluid and Clutch fluid concerns???

My post above was about need to purge ABS when going to DOT 4 fluid in BRAKE system.

NOW ... since Brake fluid can be used as clutch fluid, my question:
Can I "turkey baster" out old clutch fluid and add DOT 4 brake fluid and thru several repeat sucks and fills refresh my fluid from mostly DOT 3 equivalent clutch fluid to nearly all DOT 4 brake fluid fill as clutch fluid. (I've got enouh Motul 600 RBF around to do this) .

Denny,

I did this not to long ago. I replaced the stock fluid with DOT 4 ATE Super type 200 fluid Amber instead of blue so it will not stain anything blue. Anyway the turkey baster method and drive it around some and bleed it again. After several times it seems better color wise and have not had any issues so far. Don
