Common problems

What are the common problems on Z06? I've heard few things but just want to be clear about the situation.

The rear tires don't seem to last very long. Oh, and police cars always seem to be following me everywhere I go. I think they just like to look at the car.

I needed a new hinge on the center console. Also a loud buzz in the console was repaired. Other than that, just that the rear tires are wearing noticably at 5000 miles....

These are the concerns I recall seeing repeatedly on this site:

1. Fuel senders go bad causing gauge to read empty - (I had this problem and it was repaired under warranty).
2. Seats "rock." (My seats rock a bit).
3. Steering wheel column lock issue.
4. Some burn oil and need a re-ring (primarily a 2001 issue but some 2002's have problem, too)
5. Tires (I have 11,000 on my car and the tires are fine - depends on how you drive it).
6. Shifter sucks so most go with aftermarket. (I bought a Hurst)
7. Aftermarket shifters make ALOT of noise in SOME cars. (The buzzing is driving me crazy).
8. Lots of road noise so partitions are for sale through several vendors. (I bought Andy's and like it alot)
9. exhaust jingle due to H-pipe.
10. Ticking noise at low RPM - most have determined that it is "just the nature of the car." (Terrified me at first as I thought it was knocking. Told it was fine by both the dealership and members of the forum).

That's all I can think of for now. Hope this helps. Realize these are not all "problems." Some are just the "cost" of owning a 405 hp street legal race car.

I've got a ticking noise in the engine too. Most noticeable at around 2000 rpm. The dealer indicated it was normal...

I'd appreciate any more info you might have on the tick, still concerned it might be trouble...

Problems?? Speed limits are a problem. Slower cars on the road (read as all other cars) are also a problem. Miles and miles of road without an 'S' turn are a big problem!

I'm no tech but I have read here that it is either the fuel injectors or the lifters. You might do a search for "ticking" or "noise." You'll be sure to find plenty of speculation and a tons of explainations.

I have the tick. Sounds like a bad lifter let me slap your mamma...err, I mean vave around kind of tick. Took it to the dealer yesterday and their corvette tech told me it's normal! He told me to take a drive in a new one. I did and I couldn't hear squat! Of course the salesman is willing to make me a good deal on an 03!

And another thing, the axle shaft seal is leaking on the left side of the diff. Not bad for only 4000 miles.

Some creaks and groans...have a tranny leak( very minor, not even dripping ) some vibration in the console and the driver door. The door has something to do with the radio being on. ( might be bass from the speaker ). BTW I now have 8200 miles and the rear tires are fine.

That's been my only problem.

Do you know what the buzz was? I hear a buzz occasionally from around the center of the console.

funny that many of you mentioned the ticking sound. I test drove 04 Z06 with around 10K miles on it and it had that ticking sound especially at low RPM and idle. I was very concerned about it also...
I think the ticking is too loud for injectors but again I don't know much about vettes.

I had this noise on my 03 at around 500miles. But my 04 is still OK with over 1kmiles. And the 04 is louder compared to my friends 03 and louder than what I remember.

I fixed the 03 with a Bassani X pipe.

Was this issue fixed for the later cars? I guess I'll crawl under one of these days to find if any visual difference.

Edit: By louder, I mean the exhaust note.
