My buddy and I are going to Road Atlanta this weekend for a DE and this is his first outing. He asked me what he should take to the track. Below is the list I came up with. What did I forget?
Must Have:
•Shop towels
•Work Gloves
•Window Cleaner
•Paper towels
•Socket set (including sockets that fit lug nuts)
•Flat and Philips Screwdriver
•Torque Wrench
•Helmet
•Hat
•Extra shirts
•Milk crate to put all the crap in (Card board boxes are bad, they don’t like wet)
•Tarp (If you have to put your stuff on the ground) (Make sure to put stuff on top of tarp then wrap it up)
•Two extra quarts of oil
•Extra brake fluid
•Brake bleeder kit
•Jack
•A few pieces of wood
•Cooler
•Water, Gatorade, coke, etc
•Snacks
•Tire pressure gauge
•Sun Glasses
•Sun tan lotion
•Camera
•All the forms for the event filled out and ready to go
Nice to Have:
•Truck and Trailer
•Air Tank
•Impact wrench
•Lawn Chairs
•20 Gals Gas
•Jack stands
•Extra wheels
•All the food you need for the weekend
•Extra pads
•Extra rotors
•Lawn Tent (No sides just the top)
•Card table
•Video Camera
•Hot chick with tank top and short shorts
What org is running the event? Do they have any more openings? Do you know price or contact info?
Looks like a good list. Probably a bit of overkill, but OK. I live nearby (about 6 miles) and go there frequently. One important note about gas. RA has a credit card gas station with several grades of gas (93, 101, 110, 112). Very pricey...93 around $3/gal and 101-112 around $6/gal.
DO NOT USE 110 OR 112!!
These pumps are not marked (leaded or unleaded) and they all have the narrow filler tube for unleaded gas tanks. 110/112 are LEADED! I found out the hard way. I used about 5 gals of 110 per tank to bring up the octane for the high heat of the DE. This is particularly important during the summer. After a few DEs, I noticed a light gray residue on my exhaust tips and wondered what that was. I believe that I have ruined my cats and O2 sensors. After asking folks there about it and noting that federal law requires that the leaded pumps must use the larger diamater filler tubes, they simply stated "law doesnt matter here".
Tell your friend that he should watch for the trans over temp warning and how he should respond. It will be sunny and 93 this weekend and he will surely hit the over temp. It shoud be perfect weather, altho hot. Good luck.
II on 6, Thanks, several of those I do take I just forgot to list. The others are good suggestions. There are always a few guys that bring the last item so I figured I'd toss it on list.
Go to NAPA (big in Georgia) and spend $50 or so on front rotors. Cheap insurance as a warped or cracked rotor will ruin the day otherwise.
I would also bring a stopwatch and recruit someone to help time you. I know the DE folk really don't like this but don't use the times as a measure of how fast you are, rather utilize them to see how consistent your times are. I understand the insurance stand on this but I believe that time comparison is a great learning tool that can help illustrate smoothness.
Have a great time!

Always remember the most important tool/part is the one you don't have.
You can say that again. It's always the one thing that you didn't bring. Luckily, someone at the track might have it, so all would not be lost.
This is why we need more track events organized by Corvette owners. Tools are one thing, but if you're at the track with a bunch of other makes and models of cars, fat chance in borrowing (or buying) a rotor off of someone if you didn't bring an extra set along.
